But guess what, those that want to, still do. They won't stop you from coming in and taking a seat, but they can, and will, make certain that you understand that your patronage is not welcome, and if you can at all take a hint, never eat there again. I know the truth of this from first hand experience. As I understand it several counties in Mississipi, Texas, Louisiana and Alabama have had Marriage Bureau clerks quit or refuse to issue marriage licenses to anyone, because they are so opposed to the new LAW making Gay marriage legal in all 50 states.
So they're skirting the law, which is obviously harder to enforce. They're "smart" about it. They never actually say "I'm giving you ****ty service because of your race/religion/gender etc.... Not that doing this is right or acceptable in any way, obviously.
The problem with this case is not only did the bakery flat out refuse to serve this couple, they then went public about their decision which brought even more attention to it. Getting it to a point where it was in the news, so the crime had to be addressesd.
The portion of their fine that is based on emotional distress slander/liable etc.... Only exists because the bakery went public on social media drawing unnecessary and dangerous attention to this innocent couple.
If the bakery had said yes and then just delivered a ****ty cake this whole situation never would of happened.
Life Lesson: Don't break the law. If you do, don't brag about it.
Part of the narrative of Jeff and Vizio is that it is an anti Christian agenda. They totally ignore the fact that many gays and many of their supporters are also Christians. The view that homosexuality is wrong, immoral, vile and disgusting is so ingrained into their minds and the association of marriage with sex and perhaps for gays only with sex that they appear not to be able to even understand that selling cakes is being in the secular world not the religious one and that one does not get to choose which laws you will not obey based on your religious beliefs.

Or here's a novel idea...
Be a decent ****ing human being and don't discriminate against people...
Well... actually there is. And maybe the bakers didn't want to buy an entire case of 100 'gay' cake toppers for a one off event. Surely there are Gay Owned bakeries and they would have been all over this? Why didn't the couple use one? Did they have an agenda??? There are absolutely black owned bakeries and black couples do not have to go to bakeries that WILL happily take their money and give them a sub-standard product and/or service if they are that way out about it. Happens all the time. I would rather businesses say "we can't do your event", no reason needed, than take a deposit or full payment and then phone it in, because their heart isn't in it. Black people never wanted to make white people do anything beyond allow them to live in peace. Gay people want straight people to validate their choices even if it means going against ingrained beliefs. Given sufficient time we will see religious institutions come under attack for an anti-gay stance. Black people are not getting married in white churches. They don't need to, they don't want to, and that is very different from what we are seeing unfold in the LBGT marriage equality fight.
We don't know if they even wanted a topper since they never got to the point of discussing the design of the cake.
The couple chose this bakery because they had used this bakery for one of their mothers wedding cakes.

Indeed.
They rail that to allow anyone to have a state-sanctioned same-sex marriage is an attack on religion, conveniently ignoring that numerous denominations have no issues with same-sex marriage and in fact endorse it. By their own logic, to not allow same-sex marriage is thus an attack on those religions. Of course, the square this by blithely dismissing the religious rights of those who do not share their views.
They certainly do contort themselves into logical knots in their futile attempts to justify their bigotry.

If clerks are so opposed, quitting seems like a sensible thing for them to do.
I haven't read all these posts, but It's amazing how only certain PC groups have all this protection. Maybe childless/single people should start suing for discrimination.
I had no idea that childless/single people have been barred from obtaining a marriage license.

Seriously. All they had to do was take the order, then call back 2 days later explaining that they were so sorry, but they had already booked all the wedding cakes that particular day that they could handle.
