His trap is hate, and most in this thread have fallen prey to it....
Yet it has morphed into self righteous hate.
The most dangerous kind to ones-self, it brings dis-ease.
Love those that are like Phelps, and then move on...

Interesting...
I never thought of myself as being particularly self righteous. I guess, therefore, I would have to ask where "self righteousness" and "reaction to" would vary. Personally, (and I could be wrong) I don't see the basic human response to finding something offensive as necessarily being self righteous. I am not really sure that I hate Fred Phelps per se, as much as I truly dislike/hate the dynamic involved in what he has managed to create in himself and others. You see, the "dis-ease" that we are all reacting to is one that originates in Mr. Phelps himself.
I realize your Bible instructs people to love others as they love themselves. June typically likes herself. One an average day, I love my life. I love alot of people. But in doing so, that does not mean that I love everyone unconditionally. I would be less than human to not react to the hatred that Mr. Phelps is endorsing.
That being said, my reaction to Phelps is proportionate in it's intensity to Phelp's "mission," to the "message" that he relays. In the face of that, I cannot just turn a deaf ear, a blind eye, or "turn the other cheek" and simply "move on." His message is hurtful to too many people. For me to not react, to simply move on would imply that I am passively colluding with all that he represents. I cannot.
Your God supposedly came in the form of Jesus to deliver a message that is dramatically different from that which I see Phelp's delivering. Isn't it rather interesting that I, June, would be sitting here saying that!? It means that even I can see all too clearly that which is incongruent to what Christianity truly stands for, means, and represents within Phelp's words and actions.
I understand what the Bible says about loving people like Phelps. And while it's a good message, I somehow have a bit of difficulty with the notion of Jesus being so complicit towards hatred as to react by saying to just move on. --But then, wasn't it the very people that Phelp's alledgedly hates that Jesus came to save?
The trappings of religion are a smoke screen hiding the reality, the man is just NOT sane.
When you talk to crazy folk all day two themes come up, a bizarre obsession with either sex of religion, the really creative ones intermingle the two.
This man is a wingnut pure and simple, someday he and his followers will be found playing in traffic, claiming to have seen the second coming, or trying to catch a ride on a space ship or something equally crazy.
If they could load up a dart gun like they use on large animals in Africa with some haldol and hit him and each one of his followers, by the time they got close enough to you, they would be far more rational then they are now.
In the three years I talked to crazy folk all day, I can't even count the number of times I have spoken with someone claiming to be god or the son of god. That was just old hat, claiming to be a diety.
I am sure he will wake up one day with the realization that he is indeed the son of god or maybe even god himself and then the real fun begins. I think he will look smashing in that special white coat that buckles in the back. They will put him on the Disorient Express bound for the Hotel Silly and all will be well with the world until another wingnut jumps up in his place. OH and rest assured there will be another one.

No. Not at all. However, God is repulsed by many things including homosexuality.
Do good to those that despitefully use you and persecute you.
For if you only love those that love you, what have you gained.
The LDS bring them milk and cookies. I thought that to be an interesting approach.
godspeed,
freedom
Interesting idea! I think this group thrives on feeling hated. The more "persecution" they feel, the more validated and righteous they feel. I don't know if they'd be able to handle something like cookies and milk... it would be a much harder blow, and would probably do much more damage to their cause, than for a bunch of people to show up and protest them.
Jesus' "blow their mind" theory is a good thing...
(it's hard to hold up a sign when you have a cookie in one hand and a glass of milk in the other )

So its not that the message that is bad, just the way they carry it out?
I honestly thought about posting that earlier. My premise is that while many disagree with his actions.. they agree with the underlying message.
Is that true?
If so.. very sad.
