In yet ANOTHER story of good deeds, a Christian pastor recently did something nice for his community. He took his neighbor (non church-goer) to a detox center 90 minutes away where he was able to get sober. 6 months later, the man is still sober and very grateful for the help received.

Good for him. Or is it you? Or a composite character?

I will grant you, "if it bleeds it leads" so it's harder to come up with links to news articles about Christian leaders (or anyone really) doing good in the world, particularly outside the alternative Christian media. But if you're going to shout cupper down I'm afraid you're going to have to offer something other than an unattributed anecdote.

Maybe it's about me, maybe it's about a peer of mine in the area.

Just a new series I'm going to start. I'll try to post a new one every day--at least when I'm on.

I just want to show that there are honest, good, hard-working pastors that toil day in and day out, many in small churches in areas like mine, that never get heard of. They are faithfully loving and serving God and their people.

OK but I'm just pointing out that your first post is an assertion -- a story with no attribution. Is it something you personally witnessed at least?

Because if you're going to gain traction with this, it has to be distinguishable in some way from making stuff up.

Maybe you don't like cupper's choice of what he focuses on but he posts links at least. You and I both know that there are stories of good done by Christians ... and while the occasional personal experience testimony is fine, no one is going to credit it by and large without sources and attributions. Just sayin'. Do yourself a favor and post less often with more attributions.

In other news, a Christian pastor recently told children that something terrible might happen to them if they ever leave the church.

Yes. I know all parties involved. Unfortunately, as you say, things like that don't make the newspapers.

Good for you Viz.

I know people not affiliated with faith that do the same. I have a friend who sends in sandwiches for school kids who are without funds.

We pay if forward. Perhaps the man in recovery will pay it forward, too.

Indeed. In the spirit of fairness I actually Googled just now on topics like "Pastor does the right thing" and "Christian leader exemplary" and what I came up with was 100% preaching about how pastors should do the right thing and be exemplary ;-)

I will back you this much, though ... I've known many pastors, particularly of small churches, and I have most often not witnessed perfidy or questionable ethics (although I did see some). I have witnessed very human struggles, but by and large, they are sincere and well meaning. I can critique their dogma as harmful or unhelpful, but it's not like I've never had misguided or misbegotten beliefs. I can allow them to be THAT human. It is fair to say that 75% of the pastors I've met are good exemplars, and it's pretty easy to spot the other 25%.

When I DO see malpractice by spiritual leaders I mostly just want to see their church take responsibility for it, take meaningful actions to improve safeguards, and most of all, embrace the victims and make restitution. In certain spectacular cases (the RCC response to pedophile priests, the victim-ignoring pleas for leniency for Hastert) I see the opposite.

Finally it would be nice to see some evidence that moral outcomes are at least overall significantly better within Christianity; I'm not seeing that either.

What I'm seeing is good and decent well meaning people like yourself, trying to do the right thing and generally succeeding ... which is pretty much what I see in all walks of life. That doesn't devalue what you're doing one iota, but it doesn't support its claims of moral authority, either.

Well done. People need to see the other side of things instead of presenting this false perspective that churches and pastors are bad for society.

I'd encourage you and the other Christians on the board to also participate. Share good stories when you hear of them.
