How did you meet such a person? and how did the conversation arise?
That's one of the problems with diversity, everyone doesn't think alike...
I wouldn't be surprised if in the near future (next 100 yrs. or so), mankind enacted a worldwide system of communism so that we can all think alike and be happy, happy, happy.
It's not difficult to meet a person who believes the earth stopped rotating . They are called creationists, and by some accounts comprise 40+% of the US population.
( Many don't really understand just yet that they believe the Earth quit spinning, until you explain basic science to them . Then they realize that they must believe this to maintain their religious beliefs and they inevitably adopt the belief that the Earth stopped spinning for a day and started spinning again. ) . The creationist poster here called Omega openly admits to believing this , since to not believe it invalidates part of the creationist mythology .

Normally, a variety of beliefs would be welcomed on a Religion and Spirituality forum; however, the OP mentioned the workplace setting and that's a big no-no.

???
I don't see your point. We are not constrained at CD from discussing anything being brought up here . And the poster you quoted and I responded about wasn't talking about the OP but referenced a biblical literalist belief that the Sun stood still in the sky and the Earth was once completely flooded .

I have met many such people that believe with complete confidence that all of the things I mentioned are indisputably and absolutely valid historical events. And the conversation generally begins with some like, "Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and savior?"

Do these conversations tend to occur at Trader Joes' etc.?
Yep...He works as a Quality Insoector at work...Believes we are all being deceived by the devil into thinking the earth is round...
I just don't get how understanding the earth is "round" is the work of the devil deceiving us?
Why is knowledge and understanding viewed as evil delusions?
That's crazy thinking!
I get it that the earth is full of folks who are scientifically illiterate but to equate knowledge gained through science as devil delusions is simply insane.

Yea, like what would the “devil” gain by the deception?...

They have occured in places where one might encounter strangers. While on an airplane, for example. Very often, they have come to my door spreading the "Good News" and inviting me to come to their religious services. If anyone approaches me wanting to talk about religion, I am always willing to oblige them.

There is no such thing as the devil the bible describes and blames for everything.
Funny how the god described in the bible is one of the most evil vile freak shows ever invented...but yet is never blamed for anything and is worshiped by it's followers.

It probably comes down to being lied to in general about the true nature of the world, and how many people fall for the lie.
