Thanks 49olds for remembering my cousin (Buddy Yantis). He was in a lot of races over the years and use to go head to toe with Ricci Ware. One day he was in a really bad accident in which another car ran over his vehicle, if I'm remembering this right. He came out ok, except his ear was burned off. I think he hung it up not long after that accident. He has been running the Yantis Garage on 1604 for a number of years. Buddy's father was a mechanic and I believe Buddy's Yantis Garage is a continuation of his father's business.

Sorry, Mudpuddle for not posting that Sholtz was in Austin. I guess I just took it for granted that everyone had heard of Sholtz. I was in there last year and they have messed it up. they converted it to a sports bar and somehow that takes away from its charm. Also, they used to have the best enchiladas and now they serve chicken wings and burgers. What a waste!!

Dwangle- that must have been the old Double Eagle or Double Buzzard drag strip. I had a friend that ran an X class dragster in 1960, which had a ford flathead engine. He lived two blocks from my house and would fire that badboy up in the street. What a rush.

Gy2020- sorry to hear about your cousins ear. Do you know the name of the roundy round track that Buddy raced that was on Austin Highway? It was north of the Bun and Barrel near Harry Wurzbach and the cemetary.

Sorry, 49. I don't remember either. I was never into racetracks, even though I worked as gate security at the racetrack in St. Louis for three years. Just a job.

I grew up in the area of that old roundy-round. If the aging memory is correct, the name was Mercury Raceway.

There is something I have always wondered. Perhaps some of y'all can help?

In the movie "
Sugarland express" there is a big shoot-out in a used car lot next to a drive in theater. I know these scenes were filmed in San Antonio. Does anyone know where?

That was on Loop 13 (SW Military Highway) near the IH35 crossover. The drivein is long gone, as is the car lot. I don't recall which car lot it was anylonger, but I remember it used to advertise in all the South San yearbooks up until at least the early 80s.

It was probably the Trail Drive-In. Up till 1984, it had a real good drive-in sign. They redid the sign for a tv commercial, then they razed the drive-in. The Mission Drive-In is soon to join the list of the razed.

And I'm a pretty big comic book collector, and I remember the only place to get some back issues were at the flea markets. Does anyone know what or where the first comic book stores were here in SA? Thanks!
The first Comic book Store I remember was off of Goliad Road across from the Baskin Robins. It was called Books Unlimited. This was in the MID 70S It was owned by a Man named Peter. Who Later opened up a few on the North Side Called the Dungeon. In the 70s He also sold at the North west Flea market. IT was weird, He sold Candles and Comics there. HHW
