However, I am happy to say I eventually retired here, and am here to stay. I grew up on the NE side of town, in Universal City. Here are a few things I remember about "My side of town" ....

1. The TeePee Steakhouse on Austin Highway. Used to have a guy in full head-dress sitting on horseback out by the road. I remember this from my early Elementary School day back in the 60s.

2. Playland Park .... Who from SA in the 40s thru the 80s doesn't? Location is still undeveloped, but alas, all vestiges of the once great park have been removed .... Nothing but trees and grass left!

3. Brackenridge Park. The Witte Museum, train ride, zoo and golf course are still there. However, the old horseback riding stables ceased to exist decades ago.

4. The old Mobil Service Station at the corner of Broadway and Austin Highway is still there, though it is now some artsy-fartsy establishment. The old Mobil red neon "Winged Pegasus" sign still sits atop it, glowing brightly every night!

5. I have seen images of the remnants of Ricci Ware's Pan-American Speedway (Near the intersection of IH-35 and Toepperwein Rd.) in websites like Mapquest, but it seems that what was left of the oval track has been removed within the last 10 years.

6. Speaking of Ricci Ware, he's still kicking around SA somewhere. He used to have a daily radio show on 550 KTSA, but the last time I heard him on the radio, he was only doing a weekend gig. His son, Trey Ware, now has a daily morning show on the station. BTW, for those of you not "In the know" KTSA no longer plays Top-40 (If there is even still such a thing) .... It is now talk-radio.

7. For those of you who think that Earl Abel's is gone because it can no longer be seen at the corner of Hildebrand and Broadway .... Well, you'd be wrong! The name and the recipes were bought from the Earl Abel family and the whole shebang has been moved over to the old Terrell Plaza Shopping Center on Austin Highway.

8. The old Shakey's Pizza Parlor on Austin Highway is gone, but the building still exists. A subsequent establishment bought the building and decorated it to look like some sort of castle .... That business has been long gone too!

9. The old Frontier Drive-in Restaurant on Austin Highway is long gone. I believe the property it sat on is now occupied by a Lowes Home Center. I used to love their Char-Chili-Cheese Burger in my younger days.
Anybody remember the advertisemt for the races at Pan Am raceway on Saturday nights.........."When you're near it, you'll hear it" then came the loud roar of a stock car in the distance. Rici Ware driving his # 55 KTSA around the track ??

I think I might just drive down to the U-TOTE-UM for some curb service. Large loaf of Richters and a Falstaff. Oh wait. No U-TOTEM-UM no curb service no Falstaff what was I thinking?

Warren McVey and Linus Baer.

Nov 29 1963.

Lee 55 - Brackenridge 48.

a game with 17 kickoffs no punts and just three penalties.

McVea scored 38 points. Baer 37

Baer had 333 yards with 5 touchdowns and 7 extra point kicks.

McVea rushed for 215 yards.

Score was 48-48 with 6 and a half minutes left in the game.

Fullback Larry Townsend scored for Lee with 18 seconds left.

here quoting country singer Larry Gatlin of Wondrous Warren......

"I've never seen anybody run the football like he did. No one.
He could change direction with both feet off the ground.

He was the fastest human being in a football suit I've ever seen.

But he finally found someone he couldn't outrun,
and that was the Houston Police Department."

We all but lived out there. The entire family was into the drags. Mom drove a 66 GTO, 389, 3 dueces, headers and an automatic. Dad had a 1958 Yeoman station wagon that my cousin did a rebuild on with a bored small block, 4 barrel, mild cam, headers, and a modded Powerglide and 4.10's. I drove a 34 Ford 3 window with a highly modded SBC. I ran D Gas class. Cousin who had a parts house drove a 61 Impala with a 348 tri power, highly modded and would pull a wheelie if he wasn't careful. Other cousin had a 67 Impala 396, 4 speed highly modded. BIL drove a 52 Mercury modded. I guess it was my cousins fault we spent so much time out there. Parts were at his cost and most of the machine work was free. Back then you could race pretty cheap. Today, if you can't throw 10 grand at a car you might as well stay home. And it's no longer mine against yers. It's all about the time clock. Last time I went to the drags south of town (that's obviously been a while) I watched a 66 Falcon 4 banger beat a blown dragster as the girl hit her time exactly. That's just wrong.

Forgot about Linus Bauer and he ran with some guys I knew. Seems he had a brother too. Wonder what ever happened to him?

Speaking of curb service, does anybody remember Franz Ice House on St. Marys St. close to Central Catholic High School. Drive up, they came out and waited on you, and you were on your way. The attendant that helped you had one of those coin changers on his belt that dispensed nickles dimes quarters and pennies. What a deal.

I remember sitting on the front row of the grandstands at the raceway and when the races were over your face was all black, you had hot rubber on your face from the tires. Great times there, early 70's
