Does anyone remember the Centeno grocery store on Fair avenue and 37? We have a family disagreement as to whether or not one was located there? Also does anyone have any photos of the Black Cow that used to be on Broadway near the Witte Museum?

My dad worked for Centeno's Supermarket. He was in charge of the frozen food
section & would make the rounds of the various stores & check the inventory.
Centeno's Supermarket # 5 was located at 511 Fair Ave.
I worked at Kwex when the Centeno products were brought in & we would
set up the food display in the studio to advertise in Spanish television.
As far as the Black Cow. My wife lived on Ave. B & Josephine which was
near Broadway. This was at a time when their was more residential housing.
She recalls Weber's on Broadway, about a block down from Grayson st.
Also her favorite drink was "root beer & ice cream" or Black Cow. She does
not recall that location near the Witte Museum.
I used to work at the Prince Drive In on Broadway near the Playland Park.
My mother-in-law recalls the horse-drawn street cars on Broadway & the
end of the line or turn-around was @ Broadway & Hildebrand. Beyond that,
there was not much housing or businesses . She pointed out that Alamo
street was the main street , not Broadway.

If I recall the one on 35 and commercial was probably the biggest store.

Remember the Cine Mexico at the Centeno Marketplace on Castroville Road? It was a beautiful theatre that featured Mexican movies on one screen, and Spanish subtitled American movies on the other. Everything was first class there except the projection equipment.

I do remember, we saw many Godzilla movies there in the late 70's, my dad knew the owners and yes they did not spend too much money on the projectors. One of them was actually one that had been used at the Alameda downtown.

Yes, I remember. The Centeno's was on the opposit end of the property from where Home Depot is now. Can anyone guess what the property that this big strip center was known as before it was developed? It had an unofficial purpose. Later a small baseball diamond was built on the property but before that it had another purpose.

rather upscale residences in that location now

Texas Military Institute was demolished in 1990 or 89'. Can't remember exactly anymore.TMI was torn down at the time when the golf course was constructed.
