It gets paid by piece work so I didnt take it bc I need something more reliable than that. But it got the wheels turning that day, and made me wonder.

And of course I would update!! The advice I got here has been SO helpful!!

Paid by piece work? Yuck. I'd take something stable that is guaranteed and in your field of study. San Diego IS great but it will still be here in the future. Taking a crappy job just to stay here, IMHO would be a horrible decision.

I don't think there is anything wrong looking for a back up job and if you happen to find something that is GREAT in your field of study then you can seriously think about what you want to do.

But I wouldn't force a situation where you stay in San Diego without a good job. You can always take the other job, which you made out before to be a solid job, build up some experience and then move here later in a good position with lots of savings, experience, etc.

hi guys!!!

thought i would update to say hello! I am doing well out here in SD, living and loving America's finest city! I am still employed by the same company since September, and it's a job that pays the bills for me right now. I gave myself some time to settle in here, but now I am back to applying and job searching seriously. I definitely still support my decision to stay here, even through the hard times this move has had, and I know that being here offers me a step above some of my out of state competition. I know it's just a matter of time, and I am so glad I didn't put the dream of living here on the backburner for now! After all, I am gaining experience at an engineering company and I get to enjoy the beach every weekend haha!

Hard work pays off, and I know that if I stick with it, I'll be able to find a better job this year too

happy new year everybody, hope 2014 is good to all of us!!!

hey guys!!! thought I'd update

I'm 6 weeks in to a wonderful job with a really stable company! I started applying about 8 weeks ago like a maniac, and got 4 interviews via careerbuilder resume submissions. the next week I got 3 offers!! all with very reputable mechanical engineering firms, doing what i went to school for. SO-- it's possible! My salary is competitve, and what most mech eng grads should be expecting in pay & benefits. (my benefits are actually muchhh better than other companies actually, so I'm happy about that!)

I live in a gorgeous 2 bedroom, 1 1/2 bathroom apartment 1 block from the beach!

and it's almost summertime here, so I'm excited for that! I really love it here. The housing market blows for SD though, I don't know if I could EVER afford to buy a house and make a family here, unless I moved inland...

So, for now it's great. I'm settling in here, having lots of fun, and paying off some school debt. SD is perfect for what I need right now, esp in the fun aspect.

In a few years, I may consider somewhere else-- somewhere close to the beach, hopefully similiar to what SD has to offer in terms of great weather, vegan food, cool people... but a little more affordable. Or maybe out of the USA. My boyfriend even suggested central CA, or the coast of the carolina's (though I'm not sure they have really great weather or vegan food, but worth checking into). Best case scenario would be to find a steal under 400k close to the ocean in SD or Central CA-- it's just too beautiful here! hehe

Hope everyone is doing well!

Awesome news, thanks for the update!

Inland really isnt so bad and if its a starter home, can really be worth it, at least as in how its been for us. Lets say that where we live doesnt hasnt impacted any part of our lifestyle in any way

1 block from the beach sounds great. Enjoy!

that is great news!! PS I'd love to hear how you found your apartment and if it was in a complex or through a realtor etc. When my lease is up I may be looking again, I didn't have much luck with places that close to the beach but I also got tired of looking and just settled on something quiet that provided some nice office space.

Good luck!

That's two or three years that something could could come up that would risk tying her to Ohio. Ohio doesn't have a particularly high paying market--staying there in order to save up doesn't seem like a very effective idea. If contacts in CA are important (which is true), then how the heck is staying in Ohio going to help her get more contacts out here?

Also, do not underestimate the demand for a female engineer who looks good.
Good post,good points,and love your last sentence,too,which I bolded,LOL!
