Long Beach is not in OC. It's in LA County.

I was actually kind of referring to some of the surrounding neighborhoods too even though I said "downtown". Most people I know that go to SF don't actually go to its "downtown" but rather the surrounding neighborhoods more often.

I'm aware and already pointed that out.

From 2003-2010 I never went to downtown even once and I lived within a 5 minute drive. In fact I would drive PAST downtown nearly every day to go to the skatepark on 30th and Oceanview!

The restaurant scene, though it has gotten better in recent years, does not exactly have my toes curling and lighting up a cigar afterwards--add $15 or $20 to park and I would eat elsewhere in the San Diego area without missing anything I couldn't find elsewhere. Horton Plaza is nada de particular and the downtown movie theatres are rumored to have bed bugs. I certainly would not come down for touristy things such as parades, Seaport Village, or The Midway....I'm too old for clubs and don't enjoy hanging out with the 22 year olds still working on their GEDs who frequent the Gaslamp...I'm having a hard time thinking why and how often I would come downtown if I did not live here....living here is a little bit different in that most places are walkable and I fly fairly frequently so the proximity to the airport is a bonus...maybe Balboa Park would attract me every couple of months....help me out here, someone, please....now, if I lived in the Bay area and in Marin or East Bay I would definitely go into SF at least twice a month, maybe more....when I lived in OC, I went up to "deep" LA at least a couple of times each month (probably 6-8 times if you include Long Beach)
I should have said "urban core of SD" or something as I was also thinking of the surrounding neighborhoods too. Most people from the suburbs aren't going to "downtown SF" either but rather the surrounding neighborhoods. When I lived in SD I was only a 10-15 min drive away and would frequent it and the surrounding areas often.

So, does South Park count? Because that area is hotter than Hillcrest now. To me, you could live in South Park and never go downtown and you wouldn't miss much.

I love the Marina, Pacific Heights and North Beach but also enjoy The Mission--I trust you would not consider The Mission downtown or would you?..I do....In SD I will/would go to Bankers Hill and Mission Hills.

Isn't Downtown SF at the bottom of the hill with the big open air mall full of old buildings, with some restaurants and bank towers and art museums and the touristy waterfront? Or wait is that SD? I can't keep any of it straight anymore.

Yeah. I should have probably said "urban core" rather than "downtown".

No I wouldn't call that "downtown". "Downtown" is the Financial District, Union Square, and probably the Civic Center imo (maybe SOMA too) and those aren't really interesting areas compared to other neighborhoods in SF.

My focus was more on the "urban core" even though I kept using the term "downtown", perhaps that contributed to some of the confusion.
