Let's be honest, in Alameda County, Oakland has the lion's share, enough so that #2 is so far down it barely registers.

It also has the lions share of the population so it makes sense that it would have the lions share of all the negatives that go along with that.

Oakland makes up nearly half the population of the entire county. Same as San Jose also has the lions share of crime in Santa Clara county. When you're the biggest things come with that.

Alameda County Population = 1,510,271
Oakland Population = 395,000

That's about 26% or about 1/4 of the population of the county. According to the Sheriff's Department, Oakland accounts for about 65% of the violent crime in the entire county.

As you can see from the graph based on Alameda County Sheriff's Data, Oakland OVERWHELMINGLY has a higher percentage of crime than its share of population in the county. In fact it's the ONLY city with such a wide disparity out of ALL the incorporated cities in Alameda (most cities have LOWER crime than their share of population). So no, it's not just a population thing like you're trying to paint it. Oakland has extraordinarily high crime compared to the cities in Alameda even taking population into account.

It's true. Everyone knows that Oakland has a high crime rate. We also know that there are some very nice areas in Oakland too. That doesn't make the bad areas any less bad. My guess is that eventually that will change with gentrification.

How is that not a population thing Oakland still has a far greater population by percentage than any other city in the county so my statement is still true. As the cultural, economic and service center of the county it makes all the sense in the world that it would have a higher crime rate by comparison to the smaller towns and commuter suburbs of the county. That doesn't justify the cities overall crime rate for sure but it does put it into perspective. Oakland is the largest and most important and accessible city in its county, therefor it will attract the largest number of people to it from within and outside of the county. This will contribute to the larger amount of crime that takes place.

Most Oakland residents have voted for specific tax increases to fund Police in the past and the promises never fully materialized...

Also, Law Enforcement does make mistakes... just ask John Burris

The Task force held a family at gun point in the wee hours for the morning for some time only to find out they were in the wrong home...

At 26% of the population, you might expect Oakland to account for 26-35% of the violent crime in Alameda County at the most. But no, it is 65%! It's the only city in the county that has such a disproportionate amount of violent crime compared to its population out of any of the other 10 cities in the County. It has the highest violent crime rate in Alameda county by OVER TRIPLE the next city.

But let's pretend your theory is right, and it's simply because "Oakland has the most population" even though the stats show that Oakland disproportionaly has more crime.

Here's Santa Clara County where we can all agree, San Jose has the most population and is the seat of the county government. According to your theory, San Jose should have the highest violent crime rate, like Oakland does in Alameda:

Oh wow, looks like Morgan Hill and Gilroy are actually ABOVE San Jose, which has the most population in Santa Clara County. HMMMMMMMMMMMMM. It seems like your theory fails when applied to Santa Clara County since San Jose only ranked THIRD in violent crime rate.

Could it be because your theory doesn't work, or is Santa Clara County "special"? What say you JSBA?

Are you suggesting we ship criminals to Pleasanton and Fremont so they can have their 'fair share'?

A better question is why does Doc spend all his free time posting about Oakland crime when he doesn't live here. Another question is why everyone else indulges him on it.
