With a striking downtown core with very, very dense skyline.

Downtown Oakland is still in in the process of gentrification and struggles with crime but at least they are proposing highrises. San Jose is just an over priced suburban office park with no new construction of 15 stories.

Silvery Towers and the Graduate over 20 story downtown under construction. Downtown SJ is established and old news while Dt Oaktown is up and coming

Downtown Oakland feels like a lot of former industrial downtowns across the country that are improving/gentrifying. It has nearby ghettoes far worse than anything in San Jose. However, downtown San Jose is the most disappointing place in the entire Bay Area. Few pedestrians after 5p, and never mind DT Oakland, it's less lively than DT Mountain View or Palo Alto.

you never spend much time in downtown, period
