Yes, in SC we used to have teams that would check-in on the elderly who lived alone because they were at risk for heat strokes. And it gets hot hot down there with oppressive humidity.

That was suggested to us when our AC in Phoenix went out a few years ago. It got up to 95 degrees in the house, as this was July. Luckily it was fixed in 2 days, so there was no need. But I've been wondering about how long a block would last and how helpful it would be.

What I do is use window fans to push hot air out and then intake cool air in a window that isn't facing the sun. I have a floor fan circulating the air, especially when it's cooler at night. I know some people buy blocks of ice and place it in front of the floor fan as well.
The issue I'm facing with that is the radiant heat coming from the northern orientation. I have too many buildings and pavement in front to get much relief.

Pickles, are your friends.
Made a gallon of pickled (Lactic fermented-4 day) cabbage & carrots last week. Enough thru the weekend.

We inherited DS's portable AC. He upgraded to mini-split (3 units).
Our previous home in midvalley Ore had forced air AC. You need it. Slated to be 115 this weekend. Count on ~30 days high 80's -90's with about 5-7 days touching 100. Heat there is considerably less humid than Puget Sound area.

My mini-splits are sitting here in their boxes unfortunately, but thankfully I have a 15K portable A/C unit in my bedroom. Going to be a Netflix binge weekend in the air conditioned room for sure!

I just got a few cherries from my neighbor's tree, a bit tart but tasty. We have the family room AC on now, on low and keeping it 73. It's almost all windows, facing south, and we kept the cellular shades all pulled down. I don't know if that little unit will keep up even on high if as they say, it gets to 109 on Monday, though. Our neighbor has little kids and no AC but he's talking about sleeping in the basement which is a lot cooler.

Thanks for that, it sounds now like just another, more extreme 2009 event. Hopefully he's right and it's not the new normal.
