I think your all making too much fuss about firearms, yes I know its an American obsession, but the actual WROL("the madness") is probably going to be short lived in the general timescale of SHTF, sure some kind of defence will be needed in the interim, but eventually and in quick time, I believe some form of "community" will come together for mutual help, people will realise that they can do more together rather than trying to kill each other off, its inevitable given humans need for social contact.
believing in something won't make it happen, when other people or Nature is involved. People are too clueless and dangerous for me to base my survival upon them being sensible or "nice". To hell with that. Most people are so weak-minded/self absorbed that they will send their grandma to the butcher before they'll do even one weekend in the county jail.
