Another 4 day test match against the Kiwis. Amazingly successful home summer for the Aussies.

Smith could have skipped both series and Australia still would have won every match....

I haven't followed BBL much so I'm not too familiar with what goes on there. Today I took a look at the BBL rosters and two things immediately stood out: 1) how few foreign players there are compared to other domestic leagues, and 2) every single foreigner was from one of three countries: England, South Africa, and Afghanistan. There was one lone exception, that kid from Nepal who's been making the rounds.

Is there a limit on how many foreigners each team can field or is the pool of domestic talent so deep the teams just don't need to look overseas for top-tier talent? And why are all but one foreigners from the same three countries? Is that just coincidence?

Each team can sign 6 international players but only have 2 playing each game. Previous seasons the limit has been 4.

Not sure about the concentration to just those 3 countries, but there are a number of players only playing first or second half of the season due to other T20 competitions around the world.

Unless the BBL increases the Salary Cap which is a meagre $1.7mil AUD per team for what is a relatively long season by T20 standards at 14 games each, we may see fewer interested in coming all the way over here.

So would the BBL be considered more of a developmental league than a showcase league? I mean, there are IPL players making more per 12-game season than the entire BBL team cap...

Yes the $ contrast is enormous. Quite a few of the Aussies playing in the BBL fall into that category, individual IPL contract bigger than full BBL team cap. It will have to change. Plenty of revenue is being created from TV rights and game attendance. It gets bigger average crowds than the IPL and has for a number of years now been in the top 10 worldwide for highest attended sports leagues.

The game standard is high, and the limit on internationals does give some lesser known domestic players a shot, but i don’t think I would classify it as a development league. AB De Villiers is joining my team this weekend for the second half of the tournament.

I believe in the Cricketing world it is generally regarded as the #2 ranked T20 tournament after the IPL.

But how much more revenue is there really to be shared? BBL may have similar or even higher attendance... but naturally the TV market where most of the revenue is generated is a fraction of IPL's. If an IPL manages to get just 2% of domestic households to tune in to a match, that's 27 million viewers. Not to mention viewers from the worldwide diaspora.

Yes absolutely. Nothing comes close to the IPL. TV ratings are high in Australia for BBL but given our small population that only equates to approx 1mil viewers per game last time i remember reading about it. I have no idea of its reach outside of Australia, but suspect it is a tiny revenue source.

The BBL forms part of the total Cricket broadcast rights deal in Australia including Tests, ODI, Women’s etc. it is valued at $1.2bn AUD over 6 years. I’m sure we will see the salary cap grow but of course it will never compete with the IPL.

Zimbabwe's Sikandar Raza mows down Sri Lanka for 7 wickets in their second test match. Looks like Zimbabwe's gonna take this one walking away.

Just watched Nepal bowl out USA for 35. That was painful to watch.

ETA: Nepal batters finished off the match in 5.2 overs.

I get the feeling our tenure in League 2 will be a short one.
