Ford.
Of the 1920's.
It's called Vertical Integration.
"The plant also had shipyards, sawmills, concrete plants, and tanneries; this process was called “vertical integration.” LINK

All vehicle production today is Horizontal Integration.
Most parts are manufactured by sub contractors/suppliers.

"completely wrong" may be a tad harsh.

The 2.8L GM engine that was supplied to AMC wasn't an important piece to GM's ongoing success. Tesla isn't going to sell the above noted power management and AI systems - it's one of their competitive advantages.

If Toyota or any other company wants to put Tesla AI or HW3 in their car it will costs around $1k-2k per board for just the hardware costs and license could fetch another $1k+ The whole software development can easily costs billions to build around it. That's why Nvidia is another stock that recently popped because that's where Tesla used to buy their boards until Elon decided to build their own to save costs and get better performance. So Tesla today is not just a car company but a chip designer and software development studio. If they license their hardware to say GM or Toyota that can make hundreds of million a year on supplying the boards. Toyota's in house software team is a joke compared to Tesla.

Lets just forget those silly things called patents lol

In most cases, automotive companies turn to supplier(s) for their needs. Supplier(s) just provides them solution. So the company still drives the innovation.

A good friend has a Tesla. She let me ride with her and it was AMAZING.

This is a Model 3, which I think is basically the "entry" level Tesla. 0-60 in like 3.2 or 3.3 seconds (something like that). Car feels well made with good zip.

Outdoor drives eCar to pal's BBQ. Outdoor enjoys outdoors and has a few wienies, and a beer or two. Or three. Hey: is that Bushmill's?

So heeey! Few more and he's got a good buzz on, but it's time to split and getting dark. Bugs are coming out. Mmkay, he staggers to the new 2029 Chauffeur Especial that got him here, w/full electronics package cause hey: why not? He's in the bag, but like most can focus on one (1) task pretty well. So the car unlocks itself, and he leans in and sits. Belt on, even. Then he focuses on the panel: "Autodrive...Return to Home...Full Auto...depart (Now)...go." 5...4...3...2...1: car gentle pulls out on its own, off it goes Home.

Outdoor is beat, looks up a second, then pretty much passes out. He's happy, lightly snoring.

Miles later, Chauffeur Especial pulls into his driveway, chimes, opens door, and otherwise indicates "Home!" Doesn't fully shut down, door is open, but goes into a Standby mode.

Local PD, on burglary patrol, happens to drive by seconds later. Yep, that timing happens. They're PD, and curious: two of them pull in the driveway as this looks a bit "weird" (doors open, slumped figure, mid-evening dark, no movement).

PD notices buckled in driver, smells like Old Milwaukee and shots of whiskey, notes car is...doing not much.

Outdoor wakes up with a little help from PD, disoriented. "Were you driving..."Yessh, sort-of!"...."field sobriety!.... and he blows a .15 .

Anyone guilty of anything here? Burden of proof is on...(the State, of course, but in this case...?)
It's going to be interesting, can't wait for the future!

Companies do Reverse Engineering and do copy others. That is how Japanese manufacturing took over in may areas such as automobiles but let us not forget the Japanese generally not only copied something, they improved it. If not for the Japanese coming into the American automotive market, the US automobile companies would still be selling us planned obsolescence, crab vehicles.

I know of one example. In the 1980's 3 out of 4 engineers at Xerox were mechanical engineers. 3 of 4 engineers at companies like Konica, Minolta were electrical engineers. Xerox was hung up on moving the paper and as a result, lost their market.

While I have a lot of respect for Tesla, I also have a lot of respect for the best Japanese automakers. Honda for example, who isn't even in the robotics business, built a humanoid robot with environmental sensing, many degrees of freedom and fantastic dynamics back in 2000 - ahead of all other research groups for a decade or more, and it's not even their line of work! They've discontinued that R&D and been surpassed by MIT spinoff Boston Dynamics since then, but that took quite awhile, and I was just floored by this engineering tour de force. They weren't copying anyone.

Well, also, look at Honda Human Mobility Division. Some very handy things I could use for my patients.

Anyhow.
Here's the base line, though I somehow doubt Japanese, who were kings of electronics developments for years, are so much amazed with outfit, they passed on years ago (Toyota did. They had short love with Tesla, then sold it)

Base line is like this: Musk is another Bill Gates. He creates nothing. He's not a designer, nor an engineer, nor a scientists. He's a promoter, a projecteur.

Peculiarly, he is clearly formally backed by very deep pockets and very advanced researchers and designers. Out of nowhere, he had any credit he wanted, the best rocket team at his disposal, didn't even have to snap his fingers. Anywhere he casts his sight, he it literally offered creme de la creme of folks that, normally, are not easily shared with anyone.

Thus, Musk serves some purpose. I think, he is some sort of mass decoy, to feed either total BS ideas to them, like colony om Mars or, total crowd control ideas, like Starlink. I have no doubt, each one of his cars can be remotely controlled, if need to arise so. Add to this neurointegration, what is another modality to control crowds.
And for that purpose, his moneys will never exhaust, he will always have the best at his disposal until, of course, he'll make a mistake and will smoke a wrong kind of L. Who knows, he may end like Bill, becoming a mecenate and building even a bigger yacht to show off.

But have no doubt, man has very far going use in global elite plans.
