Artists from Corpus Christi and San Antonio, respectively. Both have noticeable Southern accents and performed in Southern music genres.

Granted, these are both very old songs. But my point is that at least traditionally, there is a pretty good argument to be made for San Antonio, Corpus Christi, etc. as being part of the South. On the General US forum, people seem really opposed to the idea of South Texas being the South, because there are too many Hispanics there. It's silly though, because someone like Freddy Fender was Hispanic but very Southern culturally in my opinion, even if he was also a Tejano.

I know Im going to sound like a broken record, but I would consider visiting South Texas and then rendering your verdict on what you think it might be. I cant think of anything I consider Southern about Laredo and the Valley. Maybe Corpus has some Southern characteristics.

Why is there so much concern/obsession over whether or not Texas is southern?

Texas overall is distinctly Texas, not like any other state.

Because Texas drives Yankees nuts. If you're not a Navajo with saguaro cacti, you must be Scarlett O'Hara with a plantation. They don't have a lot of sophistication in understanding their fellow Americans.

The issue I have is when someone who isnt from here and hasnt spent much time here tries to project what they think it might be like there and then try to argue with those that are from here if they have different opinions.

Again, he needs to visit, spend some time here, and then render a verdict on what he think it is. Then again, the OP seems pretty married to the ideas he already has. I dont see him visiting with an open mind.

Well, if you think that Freddy Fender having a bit of a Texan accent makes him a dyed in the wool Confederate, then you need to spend more time with Hispanic Texans.

I never implied that it did. I'm just saying that I think many people on CD equate confederate flag toting rednecks with being Southern.

But I do think that his accent and music style are discernibly Southern.

I am from San Antonio, my family has a 20,000 acre ranch south of the Nueces and I have ancestors that date back to when Texas was a part of Mexico.

Does my opinion count?
