probably not (when was the flashlight invented?), but I believe Lady Mary told Anna that it turned out to be unnecessary. Tony must have come prepared.

I don't remember that conversation either but I may have just missed it. Wouldn't a man know if his partner is using a cap or diaphragm? IDK. Why would Bates think Anna was trying to keep from getting pregnant if he finds it in a drawer? Wouldn't he know she doesn't use one?

They restored it to just what it had been. But virtually everything there is used to make money. The land is farmed. The butler, one of a handfull of servants, runs the gift shop. They sell a specialty horse feed that the Lady of the house developed for her horses. The chef is world class and has two sui chefs as his only staff, but they operate a full time catering service. You can get married there, and they have the tours. When they're shooting the attendance with tours really spikes. They work hard to maintain their beautiful estate, a much different kind of live than the owners of country estates back when Robert and Cora were in residence, and looking towards the future with worry. About half of the country estates ended up knocked down they were in such bad repair and the land sold so the Carnarven family was lucky.
So next season being the last will have a big impact on the castle no doubt. That's too bad. I hope the Earl and Lady stashed away some money for the future. Do they have any children? I loved seeing some of the "hidden" spaces in the castle.
the flashlight reference was a crude attempt at humor..... I should have put a in there
I assume the the device was a cervical cap, similar to a diaphragm. Mr Bates need not know. If he found it (in a drawer), he would feel that Anna was deceiving him about wanting a family with him.
Best I remember, when Lady Mary asked Anna to purchase it, Anna asked if Tony wouldn't take care of the issue, and Mary said she wasn't leaving it to chance. I think she really was still deciding. Tony took her acceptance as meaning that the decision was made. She wouldn't sleep with him if she didn't intend to marry him.
I don't think Tony pushed Greene under the tram because Greene supposedly said "What are you doing here?" before he fell, and I don't think he would have said that to Tony.
Even so, I sort of wanted Tony to tell Mary that he killed his valet for her when she tried to drop him
I have to say, an overheard "What are you doing here?" is the flimsiest evidence of wrong-doing I've ever heard.

I think I was wrong here. It wasn't in the conversation I thought it to be.
Mr Bates did see the bag Anna was carrying when they left for the night, and when he asked, she told him it was something she was keeping for Lady Mary.
Mary asked Gillingham to fire Greene, not to murder him. Gillingham would have no reason to kill him other than because of some perverted interpretation of Mary's request, which is unlikely.
The reaction Mary and Anna had to Mr. Greene's death clearly indicated their surprise. If Julian Fellowes makes one of them the murderer, then he'll be taking too much poetic license ever to be trusted again.
No, Bates killed Greene. He's the only logical suspect based on what the audience has seen.
The way this looks like it will play out is that the rape is discovered and Anna becomes the prime suspect. Based on what we know, there wouldn't seem to be enough evidence to place her or Bates at the scene. We don't know what Baxter knows, though. That could keep the investigation going.
Anna might wind up charged with the murder, which would require Bates to confess.
Whoever was selling the "Free John Bates" T-shirts a couple of years back may be able to profit from all this again.
There weren't many Socialists in Great Britain at the time, so Branson and Olive would have been outliers.
