In tonight's episode, when Mary sends Anna to get contraception. What is it that she buys? I've always been fascinated with the topic of contraception and what women did back in those days to prevent pregnancy. Was it a diaphragm?

from my understanding after reading some books that contraception in that time were thin sheets almost as thin as tissue paper was placed over the va jay jay and then the man did his business . I hope I put that delicately enough so it did not offend anyone and if it does im sorry .
someone mentioned in a rep comment that Biltmore is expensive. Yes it is. I'm sure it is more than it was 10 years ago. I think it was $20 or maybe more and I'm a very frugal person but it really is worth it. You just can't imagine how this part of society once lived. The family who privately own it now are doing a wonderful job of preserving this national treasure. I doubt there are many folks who leave (and you can spend hours on the grounds alone) say they did not get their money's worth.

Well, that sounds completely foolproof.
I also assumed it was a diaphragm because it was in a small box.
I've watched the first two episodes of the series on the Smithsonian channel. It is very good. They said 2,000 American heiresses were married to English nobility during the turn of the century. Sadly, not all of them were happy marriages, with the American wife paying for a title while living in a loveless relationship. But a lot of those palatial homes in England would have been in ruins now had it not been for the influx of American money.
If you get the Smithsonian channel, the program is on right before Downton Abbey on Sunday.
I loved how Robert told Cora to stop having her friend flirt with Isis......
Ring, Ring. Clue phone, it's for you, Robert.
I guess Robert thinks that because everyone knows that cora is his wife that they would not dare flirt with her , guess it would never dawn on him that some people have no moral compass so to speak ...yes Robert someone did flirt with Cora and not Isis ..
If anyone's ever read/seen Cold Comfort Farm, which is set around the same time, the character Flora tells the milkmaid who gets pregnant every year that she can wear a "little hat on the inside" to prevent pregnancy. Sounds like a diaphragm, but I wonder if you could just buy one over the counter.
