I enjoy this thread greatly and appreciate others' contributions. Here are some of my predictions for the rest of the season. I've haven't watched or read ahead, which makes the discussions more enjoyable for me.
I think Thomas may replace Carson by the end of Season 6. Odds are they will need to downsize on staff. Downsizing is the a hard reality for estates and retirements are an easy way to exit a character.
Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes (how can we not call her that?) will retire and move to their own home. When the rumors of downsizing become reality, Carson will decide that's the time to retire in order to save other Downton servants' jobs. I can see him call everyone around the downstairs table to make his announcement and spin the timing as loyalty to Downton, above all else, and his fellow staff members.
Carson and Mrs. Hughe's positions won't be filled. Instead, their duties will be combined with other existing jobs, as we saw at the decrepit estate where Thomas interviewed, although not to this extent. Both Carson and Thomas spend a lot of time sitting around reading the newspaper, Carson with a drink and Thomas with his feet up to irritate Carson.
Unlike Mosely, Thomas has the poise to be head butler. He's demonstrated loyalty to Downton, mixed though it may be, and is happy to do whatever dirty work is needed. Mary will appreciate these characteristics and Robert will go along with it.
If Mrs. Patmore retires, the only person who can fill her shoes is Daisy. Daisy is educated enough to run a kitchen and even take on some of Mrs. Hughes' duties. That relieves Mr. Mason from having to provide for her. Instead, she will have ended up helping him if he moves to Downton, which won't happen without some drama since they've assumed Cora is farther along with the so-called plan they assumed she has in the first place.
Mary and Tom will marry or at least get engaged. There will be some financial scare requiring cutbacks, but they'll work together and save Downton, again. They'll clash with each other and then someone will have an epiphany about what the relationship really is.
Edith will claim Marigold as her own and settle in London as a hands-on newspaper woman. Her magazine will be posed for great success based on changes she initiates.
Anna will have the baby, but not without some medical drama associated with the procedure. This may play into the hospital plot line if the procedure is done at Downton by the London doctor, which was the doctor's initial suggestion. Bates will lose his temper with her for withholding information related to his child, but will forgive her, as always.
Robert and Cora will remain as they are, grateful for family and Downton being saved. Isobel will make up her mind and (I hope) choose Dr. Clarkson.
This leaves Violet and her help. The tidy thing is for her to die at an inopportune moment, which I hesitate to predict because it is too predictable. Denka and Spratt will get what they deserve, which may be each other. They got awfully chummy at the end of last week's episodes.
I'm wondering at this point what year it is. Didn't this season begin in 1924? The worlds economy is going to plunge in a few years and a lot of plans will get put aside. But it was a boom and bust cycle in the US, and I'm guessing the business with his brother didn't prosper. And sometimes it takes leaving to know how much a place matters.
Given that the farm producing income is absolutely necessary, and Mary is now the agent, I'm wondering is we will see a partnership between she and Tom. There's a chemistry between them, and they're both fighters willing to see beyond the obvious.
I have the bbc version of the season still in its shrink wrap. Just sooo much temptation.
Season 5 ended in December 1924.
Season 6 starts in April 1925 and will end on New Year's Day 1926.
I'm thinking Mary and Tom will decide to get married and for some reason the wedding is staged in Moldavia. At the ceremony, where everyone from the house is present, suddenly O' Brien and Thomas rise up in the balcony and machine gun everyone in sight. The series ends with bodies draped all over the place but we don't know who is alive, dead or wounded.

Good Lord, thank you for some levity as it can get a bit too intense on here!
Unfortunately the Brits have let the cat totally out of the bag (we get a delayed broadcast) and while I haven't watched the episodes, I will say that I seen enough hints to say that you are way off course.

Oh well, I had fun thinking about the possibilities and look forward to some surprises. I feel like I'm one of the few around here who doesn't know what's going to happen.
Does anybody but me think this season is a bit blah? Of course, they can't start new plot lines etc. while trying to wrap everything up neat and tidy for the finish... but really, I thought the wedding was a bit somber and boring. Tom showing up right in the middle of the toast was dumb, they could have made a whole separate thing of that, and did they even show the wedding sit-down breakfast?
I'm a bit bored with the whole hospital thing, seems to be dragging out. Then there's Anna and Bates... Anna with the medical scare and they never showed anything of that, her in bed after the fix and the dr. saying all was well, none of that...and when she finally told Bates it was almost missed, just a "really" and a smile...
And didn't they shorten the scene with Her Ladyship in the hall about the farm going to Drew?
I loved the other seasons, there was some drama to keep it interesting... is it just me this season?
