Movement toward vote on unemployment extension slow but steady

Yesterday Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) threatened to hold a midnight vote to speed up bringing to the floor a final vote on pending unemployment extension legislation.

Reid didn't have to make good on his threat, and the procedural vote itself might not have to happen.

Apparently Reid's office said today that party leaders should be able to make agreements on the pending amendments to move the bill directly to a final floor vote, which is music to the ears of thousands and thousands of unemployed Americans in dire straits right now. [No timeline was specified by Reid's office.]

I was wondering how many people on here followed the "Bill" for the other extensions as on this one. Although I started the other threads for the previous extensions, it was to get answers, then to help others with questions and answers. It was basically from news, the internet and NJDOL. This extension went a step further in actually following the Bill itself in Congress.

Now I'm watching c-Span2 and getting a lesson in politics somewhat. Some of you on here are really good at digging for info and the rest of us thank you, but as previously posted, it takes all of us to put this thread together, whether questions, answers or both. Thanks to all for the information put into these NJ Unemployment Threads, all extensions.

Default Pelosi Waiting To See Final Agreement

Updated by Bloomberg.com about 15 minutes ago:

The Obama administration today endorsed plans to extend an $8,000 tax credit for first-time homebuyers, saying it is helping stabilize the nation’s housing market. The tax break will expire Nov. 30 unless Congress intervenes.

Senate Democrats have announced plans to extend the credit until April 30 while expanding it to include higher-income Americans and some who already own homes.

Democrats have been pushing to include the provisions in an unemployment benefits bill, which has been held up by a disagreement with Republicans over other proposed amendments. [The Obama Administration yesterday announced its official support of the unemployment extension bill currently in the Senate, per the New York Times.]

Any legislation would have to be reconciled with a House unemployment measure approved last month that omits the homebuyer tax provisions and extends jobless benefits only in states with the highest unemployment rates.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, is waiting to see the final Senate agreement before deciding whether to support it, said spokesman Nadeam Elshami today in a statement.

Default October Unemployment Numbers: Fewer Lost Jobs

Reported by the Christian Science Monitor about 10 minutes ago:

Unemployment numbers for October will be released next week, and while they may report a decrease in lost jobs from September, they will still show an unemployment rate that is far too high, according to Christina Romer, the White House's Chief Economist and Chairman of the administration’s Council of Economic Advisers (CEA).

The US unemployment rate hit a 26-year high of 9.8 percent last month.

“We’re still in for more bad news before we see positive [job] growth,” said Romer. "The number of lost jobs is so great that it will take many months, if not years, to replace them. You need four to five percent GDP growth to get job growth."

That means the unemployment rate might remain near the current number as next year’s mid-term elections approach.

Romer made the comments about unemployment during a conference on recent improvement in the US economy.

The fact that the nation’s gross domestic economy grew in the third quarter is “incredibly important,” according to Romer. "If nothing else, it shows that the US economy has turned the corner, moving from contraction to growth.

It’s a wonderful milestone. But it’s just a milestone. There’s a long distance to go before we’re back to normal,” Romer stated.

<snippped>
How much higher would those numbers be if we who have "run out of EB already" get added in to the October total?

Are there stats kept anywhere for how many have totally run out and are currently sucking wind? I'm sure at least 4 or 5 of those people found jobs by now so it does not have to be exact.

TIA
