One more day of this ridiculous heat by March standards and then a return to temperatures ONLY 10F above the average! This will likely go down as the warmest March on record for a good chunk of the country. One consolation for those that prefer cooler weather is that the "Bermuda High" that has been sitting off the East Coast for days will finally break down over the next 48 hours. This will setup a gradual cooling trend. Orchard growers have been very nervous the past several days as the "green up" period would be about to occur if the extreme warmth persisted any longer.

Today's temps as shown above averaged 15.5 degrees above the old highs. Has that ever happened before, Cambium?

Actually it has..Just a quick look and I found many days which had 15 degrees above normal days. Just to name a few.
  • April 23, 2007 hit 82°. Normal is 59°
  • May 24th & 25th 2007 hit 88° and 89°. Normal is 70°
  • November 5th and 15th 2008 hit 64° and 62°. Normal is 50° and 46°
  • February 11th 2009 hit 52°. Normal High is 30°
  • January 23rd & 24th 2012 hit 44° and 46°. Normal is 27°
February 2012 had many days itself.

Here's a cool State-by-State Look at How Early Spring Has Arrived

In the interactive below, you can see how much earlier spring has arrived state-by-state, measured by the date of first leaf. As you hover over any state, it'll display two boxes: a gray box that represents the day spring used to arrive (based on the 1951-1980 average) and a colored box that represents how much earlier spring has arrived (based on the 1981-2010 average).

Interesting link. And thanks for the reply, but that wasn't exactly what I was looking for with my poorly-worded question. I was curious to know if any previous record highs, not normal highs, were bested by as many as 15 degrees, like they were yesterday.

Oh, sorry, that would be interesting for sure. Unfortunetly due to lack or resources and help I might have a hard time finding answers. How would we check? Maybe find the record high day and then check the previous high(if available). I'll see if I can find anything.

Well, at least we'll be entertained until it disappears. GFS Model consistantly hinting at a trough in East(Cold) after end of month and now throws a big surprise for April 2nd.

Widespread 10-20" of snow in northeast with a coastal Bomb.

Nothing surprises me anymore but IF...IF this happens, the trough would have to go negative filtering cold air down and the wwarmer waters would fuel the storm.
