I spoke with my superiors, the "Fed Shutdown" doesn't affect all of the agencies and individuals in the same way. According to them:

-The more significant the duty, the higher the possibility that the individual will not have to (or in a certain perspective, be able to) stay home.
-The more significant the agency, the less time the follow agency will face a furlough. In my agency that deals with domestic defense, the last furlough in '95 only affected them for two days.

Essentials are not affected. I don't believe we are essentials though

Umm, there are more Gov't workers not in the DMV, than in the DMV. A lot of those out in the fields aren't getting paid much either. My gf works for the national weather service and they were talking about possibly making each field office close for a month. So each field office would basically get a month vacation.... Therefore, for a month at a time different regions of the country would not get tornado warnings etc.. Also, guess what else that means, the national Hurricane Center would shut down in the middle of Hurricane Season for a month. Don't cha love it..

Just a few years ago, the gov't wasn't isht. No one wanted to be a gov't employee. Now that the economy is messed up (because of the private sector's own actions), yall want to bash gov't workers. SMDH.... I really think Fed employees should show the country how it would feel without us.

No one to process Social Security checks, no one screening planes for terrorist, the FDA should stop testing food for diseases, the border patrol should let it be open season on the border (close to it anyway). Let's see how long it would take for the country to descend into chaos.

I'm not TRYING to bash fed employees but HONESTLY for federal workers to have this holier than thou attitude about getting pay cuts/layoffs/freezes is really....*no words*....seriously, it was bound to happen, like it or not.......it's a recession if you haven't noticed so suck it up and try to survive like the rest of us...plain and simple *shrugs*...We can give you tips and advice on how to make it through this but what else do you want from the rest of the country after we've all been through h*ll and back ? A hug?

.......What makes you all immune to what everyone else has been going through? Are you implying that a federal employee is more important than a private sector worker because I got news for ya....We're all pretty much in the same boat right now and fed workers may be taught a valuable lesson in regards to how important "upper management" and certain portions of the population think you all are....just like we were. Especially since computers automate half the things you all do anyways (or that's what the bosses think and I'm sure they talk about it ALL the time)...I'm not trying to be mean but you all need to wake up and smell the coffee for what it really is.....This country is in DEEP financial trouble and you're on the chopping block because certain people do not value your worth...the quicker you understand that concept, the better off you'll be and can recover alot quicker....I'm saying this out of total honesty and what I had to realize to move forward and eventually come out better than I was before.......or else you can go on chat rooms trying to derive sympathy from people who can't give out any more because of the s**t they've gone through............................. Welcome to America in 2011-Federal Workers i Where you are worth nothing and are quite expendable!...Go ahead with your brothers and sisters and protest about the plight of the federal worker but don't forget or degrade the contributions of private sector workers in D.C. and beyond to support and help you all either.......

How a Federal Shutdown Could Affect Americans - BusinessWeek
BTW-border control and other important agencies aren't shutting down...so why else should the nation be concerned at this point? Especially if you're trying to convince decision-makers........also, who cares if Fed work wasn't popular back in the day...it's a job, not a popularity contest? If that is supposed to get some sort of sympathy, try working a janitor job like my mom who only took the job after being laid off from a factory and now her hours are getting cut as we speak. Then you can come back to me about the "popularity" of you and your gf's position or how little you're getting paid.

Also...I'm sorry your gf is going through cuts...but tell her to look at other options like private sector reporting just in case and keep her network sharp...might be a tough pill to swallow at this point but it's no use beating a dead horse.......

She works at HQ, She not going through cuts. The field office will be furloughed.. Which means that those severe weather warnings that you all love so much, will be a no-go. I am sure that the coastal states and your beloved GA, will love having the national hurricane center shut down. To kill a couple more of your points.

1. Everything can't be automated, plus no one will be there to check the system in case something goes down.

2. You can kill the mess about upper management, there is one group out there that does not value the work of fed employees and that is Republicans...

3. Anyone who says they are serious about cutting spending but won't cut defense spending is full of isht. They want hard working Americans to sacrifice while our taxpayer dollars go towards buying viagra and child sex slaves for Afghan warlords (true story)

4. Personally, I have three months worth of savings put away and no kids or wife to take care of so I will be good. At this point, I kind of hope the Govt shuts down for a Month. I really want the country to see how bad things get when Grandma can't get her social security check.

I'm sorry but both of you sound very ignorant. Let me break this down for you. I understand that private sector employees have been laid off, I myself was unable to get permanent employment when I was working for a company at the beginning of the down turn. Everyone has suffered, even government employees. We are being affected little do you know because we are not able to have COLA raises and budgets are being cut left and right, which means some people in the government have been getting laid off!!! Now before you get upset about me complaining about raises, understand this, when I took my government job, I took a salary $30K less than I would in the private sector!!! I'm a Computer Science major with a Masters and I started off making way less than my peers, some of which only had Bachelors. That means less money to make and less money to save. Not to mention my wife and I just got out of school so both of us have student loans, so what do you think we are able to save? And even though it is a sacrifice, it is worth it because government jobs are much more stable than private sector jobs. Even with a good economy businesses are always looking to cut cost, so please don't think that people are suffering with job lost just because of the economy. Trust me, these companies don't care about any of these individuals, which is why I didn't waste my time with them. They will cut you once they determine you can't benefit them.

You can talk about us not getting furlough, but understand that people have jobs that they are severely underpaid in order to live in this region and they are a missed day away from losing their home, but yet you think that's okay right because misery loves company, right? There is a lot of things that I would sacrifice for this country, but you need to understand that we aren't being possibly furloughed because of budget concerns, we are being furloughed because to arrogant groups of people can't come to a compromise about what to keep and what to lose. Please get your facts correct. I don't know about you, but I'm sure most of country would be mad if their livelihood was being decided by a bunch of ego driven jibberish that is going on in Congress. If anything you should be mad at Congress, because even being unemployed, you still have to pay these people salaries and they still get to enjoy their wealthy lives. And what's so bad is regardless of how you are living, they don't care about you, but yet you are just like all these other ill-informed Americans who want to blame federal workers for these things that YOUR elected officials are doing.

Do you understand what happens when a government is not in place? Do you understand that this country would be in total chaos? Have you been around the world and see countries that don't have a structure of government (i.e. Haiti)? Government is serious business and it affects all of us. If anything I would think you would be pushing to get us to work more because after all YOUR tax dollars pays our salary and regardless of if we are working or not you will still have the same amount taken from you. Why would you want to pay the same amount for less service? So we can suffer like you? Okay sure. We are already suffer because most of us don't get paid anywhere close to most people in this region working similar jobs.

being objective here, i don't think you really got what she was saying. she empathized with government workers, i think she was just saying what makes you guys any different from the private sector employees and even state and local government employees who have been laid off, fired, and furloughed.
