If every day in January was as nice as today (45-50 degree range & sunny), or maybe just slightly warmer than this, I probably wouldn't hate winter as much as I currently do.

Those of you in the upper mid West....Get Ready. Not only for the cold but for Blizzard conditions. 13th and 16th.

Depending on track I think Iowa, Minnesota and Wisonsin are the Jackpot zones.

I agree. Today was a really nice day. Tomorrow looks like it'll be nice a sunny as well, though not as warm.

Agreed. Middle to end of the month has the potential for solid snows and more subzero temperatures in Wisconsin for sure. Remember that the "averages" in January are 26F for the high and 11F for the low in south-central Wisconsin.

Whats the problem for the east? This is for this coming week.

2 things killing winter. The southeast Ridge & the Pacific Ridge. We got to get everything to shift East! AND TIME IS RUNNING OUT NOW. Very hard to shift a 500mb pattern! But its been like this for 4 weeks now so it should.

But this is a pattern which storms cuts to the Great Lakes

You can run the loop for the Euro00z 500mb pattern here. 00z 12z ECMWF Images 5 rows down scroll to the right, click loop.

I see that the same general pattern has persisted since the pattern change in mid-December, with the cold being centered in the center of the country. You East Coasters still have almost 2 months to go before your window essentially closes, and there are some positive signs for you. As the cold works its way south and east, it is very possible that you could get in on the action, but it appears that the interior is king this winter (big Connecticut snows and the Chicago snow hole excepted).

That "SE ridge" is interesting. It's not a classic strong SE ridge, but it isn't exactly weak. It's more displaced than weak, and the upper-level high isn't even centered in the South - of all places, it's centered in Nova Scotia . "East Coast Ridge" perhaps?

I've also noticed that the Western ridge has moved from being centered in the Bering Sea to being centered in SW Alaska, so there is some progress going on.

35°F now at 10 AM. Starting Tuesday, we have 40s predicted every day with a possible 50+ day on Sunday (gotta makes sure to get out). There's been snow on the ground since about Christmas here, probably all of it will melt?

Except shoveled piles

Jeez, this heat ain't no joke. It's hard to believe it's January when it feels more like July outside. It's ridiculous.

Hopefully my wife and I will be moving to someplace that gets cold soon. Looking at northern FL, GA or TN or maybe Alabama.

It is currently 78 degrees outside but it feels like 90. Just 400 miles or so in Tallahassee in the same state, it's 49 degrees and 60 in Tampa. Now what kind of a rip off is that??

And for most of the eastern half of the country, this week is going to be mild. I expect the snow to be all gone in lower parts of the Midwest by the weekend.

I'm thinking the same thing! High 30's this week, rain Thurs. night, lots of wind, snow will be disappearing, not normal Jan. weather!
