Hmm this is what I mean. Yesterday was sunny all day, so technically should have recorded maximum 16.5 hours sunshine. Obviously as dunno said, there is a slight period after sunrise and before sunset where it cannot be measured due to obstructions, but a whole 3 hours? 13.7 hours sunshine for the day which is 3 short of the true value.. that's almost a 25% loss from the true value

In comparison, Nice appears to have plenty of days with 13 hours+ sunshine on their completely sunny days, despite having only 15 hours daylight, so they have only lost 1.5 hours, also plenty of 14 hours+, so this can't add up surely? It was definitely completely sunny all day yesterday, as I was awake at 4:30am

At 7 hours before/after solar noon, the sun is at 8.73° in London and 5.37° in Nice. If the recorder threshold is sun 5° above the horizon, the maximum for London would be 14 hours and 55 minutes. For Nice, 14 hours and 5 minutes.
From heat waves to ground freezes- Polar air has flowed in over larger parts of Germany and due to clear skies and weak winds, last night was exceptionally cold in parts of Western Germany.

Impressive variability. Didn't expect ground frosts would be possible there in July, how frequent is it there. Is it just northwest Germany? Or other parts as well?

Most of the places listed here are actually cold sinks- but despite this such low minimum temperatures or even ground freezes are not very common there in midsummer, maybe every 2 or 3 years i guess.
The center of the cold was concentrated on parts of Western and Central Germany, but basically 2/3 of the country had lows in the single digit range and also the Benelux states (Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg had very low temperatures (except for the coastal area) and some spots also recorded ground freezes there.
I looked at some sunshine stats from 2013, and seems like some 50 minutes of daylight might be 'lost' sunshine here at 60N. If you assume that it's sunny 50% of the time (in summer), 12-13 hours of sun might go to waste a month.
