IMO, the trick is to always pay it off and don't let the rewards and the intangibility of the money induce you to purchase more than you otherwise would. I've used the rewards to my benefit.

I pay mine off every month, but think there's always room for cutting back. Too much eating out. Seems easier to hand over a credit card than a $20 bill. Obviously silly and irrational, but there's a lot of psychology involved when it comes to money. Just have to be disciplined.

You're right - what you're saying is corroborated by psychological research.
It depends on the card and transaction type (your financial institution will pick up on the merchant's MCC code). Some cards offer higher percentages for gas & groceries. Generally it's a bonus of anywhere between 1-3% though some can go as high as 5%, I believe.
Debit cards generally don't offer cashback (unless of course you're talking about receiving physical cash back from the merchant in exchange for them raising the price - i.e., something else entirely). They do that because debit card transactions are a flat fee. Credit cards are on a percentage basis, and I think in additional to an initial fee. So merchants won't give you cash for using your credit card. But banks still make money from debit card use. They just don't generally give you rewards for using it. Ever wonder why banks now seem to push debit card use? They do here in this country nowadays. When it comes to credit cards, banks have to compete to offer the best terms and best rewards programs.
It's over 20C here now. Not the most pleasant temperature this early in spring. I remember March 25, 2013.. we had snow here on that date.
