I'll never understand the high concentration of tanned natives in certain Northern countries. I'm as Northern as you'll get and I rarely if ever tan and that would be true for the vast majority of people in my country.
Anyone in my country that does tan usually has Mediterranean/Indian ancestry e.g. Huguenots from France or Italians.
British people are probably the palest in Europe. People in other Northern countries tan much easier than your typical pasty-skinned Irishman.

Welsh people are pretty dark. But yes, northern continental Europeans generally tan better than the pasty-skinned types more common in the British Isles, even among populations with higher rates of blondism.

That's what i'm commenting on, I wonder why that is?
Whiteness didn't evolve because of weaker sun, but actually mostly by a change of diet. A few thousand years ago, the peoples of Europe started exchanging their animal based diets for grain and starch based ones. Bread and potatoes don't really have much vitamin D, and so the people had to get it from the sun instead. This is the reason inuits and eskimoes are so dark skinned; their diet has always revolved around seafood, rich in vitamin D. Not because the ozone is thinner around the north pole (which it definitely is not) or because the snow makes the UV radiation high. Maybe people from the nordic countries tan easier as well because fish has been a much larger part of our diets than in the UK.
