The type of card isn't the point, the point is that they cancel it without any sort of notification or anything

Depends on why it was cancelled.

They sent out a new card to my parents house and eventually they cancelled my new one. Shouldnt they at least wait until the new card is activated before cancelling my old one?

No, because they do that just in case someone took your card. Wouldn't you want your card to be cancelled right away if someone stole your debit card? If not, they could just use it freely and wildly whenever they want to.

I have a god awful cold which is keeping me up at night. It would be bearable only it is accompanied by an incessant cough that goes on for hours night after night.

I can't possibly sleep in those conditions.
