Finns are happier because all the unhappy ones kill themselves?

Why do the "happiest" countries often have relatively high suicide and depression rates? Apprently Iceland is one of the world's happiest countries, yet has the world's highest levels of anti-depressent usage. That doesn't correlate very well.

I guess there's more to happiness than statistics on a spreadsheet.

It has been studied and it seems that suicides increase if the people surrounding you are happy. But almost all of those most unhappy countries are at the top in suicides. None of the happiest are in the top 30. Norway is #81 globally.

Also, the countries with the most developed healthcare systems with very high income like Canada and Australia tend to have high antidepressant use. If in Uganda you can't even get a malaria vaccine or headache pills, how could you possibly get antidepressants? And even if you could, you couldn't afford it anyway.

In comparison to their developed counterparts, many of them don't fare well. Iceland not only has a high anti-depressant usage, it actually has the highest usage by a long shot, and you can't put it all down to economics, since there's countries with similar expendable incomes and healthcare systems that are using them far less.

Perhaps that's why they're always happy? When they carry out the surveys the people they ask are doped up to their eyeballs

Iceland? Try and live in a place at 64 N without snow cover, with hardly any sun even in summer, no warmth, endless rain and heavy winds year round. No wonder they're depressed razza

Yeah, it's a beautiful place, but definitely not the kind of place I'd choose to live. Not just for climactic reasons, but it's one of the few places that makes us look tropical by comparison

The climate in the Nordic countries would probably drive me insane. Malmo does seem decent enough, can't be much worse than Upstate New York

Comparison of suicides? Most of the top 10 countries have low suicide rates.
