I hope this is true somewhat, even though El Nino tends to sometimes make the northern US a bit dryer than normal, but not as extreme as what La Nina seems to do to the southwest. I'm really hoping for a zero (in between) year and most of the country being above normal in terms of precip. We don't need anymore drought in the south/southwest. I can think of least half the years in this region since 1996 have been way too dry/with fires, heat, in the Spring and Summer. We've only had maybe about 3-4 really good years since then. Even most of the non-drought years since 96 have mostly been average at best with even still some dry months. I know I or we can't change the pattern but I don't want to hear of another drought or La Nina again for a good while. I'm tired of not being able to grill on a charcoal fire or burn my kiva in the weekend evenings. Time for a PDO shift to positive. We've been in a general neg phase since 1996 and I hope we will be going through a phase shift soon. Done with seeing frequent droughts covering the plains and west/southwest.
