I thought this was an early April Fools joke when I first saw it but I guess it's real. The red area within the circled area in Southern California is under an excessive heat watch!

I agree with Chris.. I dont care how much above normal it is, these temps wouldnt warrant a heat advisory in the summer. No need for it now. Guess it helps "the cause".

Gives the Weather Channel something else to name. Maybe send Mike Seidel out there under a heat lamp and show him sweating.

The only possible explanation I could come up with for them saying that with that excessive heat watch is because of the Super Bowl being played there this weekend? But yeah, people around here go to Florida, Mexico, the Caribbean in the middle of winter all the time and I've never once heard any of them come back and complain it was too hot.
The fact that NWS offices can make these calls on their own is kinda why you can't really rely on NWS products as statistical indicators. It's the same with severe weather every season. Some offices are just itching to hand out a severe thunderstorm warning for just about any storm while others will pretty much sleep on cells until they get a call from a chaser reporting a tornado on the ground.
