Again, there are areas of Yonkers (Bronxville border) and portions of New Rochelle that are gorgeous...a little sliver of Mount vernon still has nice homes (again on Bronxville border) but go a few blocks south and its your typical inner city - a formerly nice area run down and dangerous.

Why don't you re-read the OP's original post and follow up comments??? With his/her budget why the heck would you want to live near Mt. Vernon? Mount Vernon is for folks who can't afford to live anywhere else. Its worse than many areas of the Bronx...Its ghetto, its violent, its drug infested...its well...we all know

But if you if makes you feel better to call Bronxville snobby because its a pipe dream for you then so be it....

If you think Fleetwood is too close to the dangerous ghetto, then no place in Bronxville is safe either because no part of Bronxville is more than a 15 minute walk from Fleetwood. Bronxville's shopping district is about 5 minutes, on foot, from Fleetwood.

An employee of mine knows a Mt Vernon cop and we were talking about it. The cop friend says that MtV has gotten worse as everyplace else has gotten better. He says it's as bad as the S Bronx ever was back in the day in terms of drugs, street crime, random violence etc. Don't shoot the messenger, I'm just passing it on.

There is a portion of Mount Vernon that is indistinguishable from Bronxville, only you don't see as many old people as you do in Bronxville. I would not go too much south of the Cross County.

(It's true that Mount Vernon took a nose dive about 30 years ago and never recovered, but remember, there are people who live there now-no need to insult everyone in 2 towns so harshly. We're all in this together, remember.)

However, whenever I am in NY I am frequently in Bronxville, and everyone seems to have white hair. Makes me feel like a real babe. One big advantage right there.

Living in that still nice section of Mount Vernon is fine if you don't mind admitting that you live in Mount Vernon...and that is a HUGE issue for people. Real Estate signficantly cheaper and, if you don't have to use some of the worst schools in NY, I guess its not a big issue. I surmise that for 95% of people having a Mount Vernon address is a problem. Its a shame you can see it was once a beautiful area...like many areas...taken over and destroyed...

It's unbelievable now, but A.B. Davis (Mt. Vernon HS) used to be one of the top schools in the country. My parents went to high school with Dick Clark, and in those days school districts across the country would visit A.B. Davis to study the school system and how it was so successful. I just came across an article about Dick Clark and how he was actually a SNOB because he went to AB Davis. I know this was a buzzilion years ago (1940s-1950s), but there was a time when Mt V was a nice place to live.

In the 60's some fool decided to destroy all the high schools in the city and build one huge one where everyone would attend. It threw different economic groups together, different races together, in a school of 5,000 kids. The grand exodus began and never stopped.

Yes, John70, if you don't have to use the high school, you're ok in the northern edge. And you can always say you live in Fleetwood.
