Garth,

Here is the Brasstown Beef web site: Home Page (http://www.brasstownbeef.com/Home_Page.php - broken link)

You can purchase direct from them in large quantities. They also sell at Greenlife grocery in Asheville.

For me, it turns out they've opened a retail store right on their farm, which is close to where I live. I guess I know where I'm going next.

Goodbye Ingles!

I lived in Asheville for 25 years and never had good beef from any store. I had to move to Wyoming (home for me) just to get the good stuff.

Interesting link on the BB Beef joint...but with the 90 miles from Waynesville, each way, I don't think we will be making the trip frequently.
My beef high consumption days are eroding as it is.

Oh we don't eat beef all the time. It's just that I think it should be decent when I buy it. Anyway, at least you can get it at Greenlife or Poppies when you want it.

Interesting article on Brasstown Beef: http://www.smokymountainnews.com/ind...news/item/1263

They dry-age their beef to increase flavor and tenderness, and to eliminate shrinkage during cooking. I noticed on their web site that Biltmore Estate serves their product.

There were a couple of Ingles in the W-S area years ago. Think there maybe one in Walnut Cove (small town). To me they were sub par from the looks of the store. Need to get Krogers back in town. Was a great place to shop. And from the looks of them now they are still strong.

Well, Ingles recently remodeled and drastically expanded a couple of their stores here. They are very nice now.

But that's another reason I can't figure out why the meat went downhill. All that money to make the stores nicer, yet the meat is worse?

Take it back. Complain to management. Even if you think everything else is great and love them. Let them know that the meat is sub par. Tell maangement not the meat case guy. have your friends that agree with you. Upper management will listen you just have to make some noise. Go higher. Ask the why questions to them. Let them know you want answers.

However, when we want to get something I think it's going to be the only game in town.

We also went to a local (Fairview) ranch that raises and sells their own beef. It was fresh and thier marketing concept is great, but they were grass fed so that's what kept their product from being what we would consider top quality.

I agree that Poppies is about the best place to get good quality beef anywhere in the area, otherwise it's a commodity that's not a common animal (so to speak) in this neck-o-the-woods. I sure miss enormous, juicy and tender beef ribs!
The next time you go to Poppies try Everett Farms Beef, it is located in Brevard. I think they have it at Greenlife also. Sign up for Poppies email. They run specials on beef pretty often.

Considering Franklin is a little closer, you might want to check out Nantahala Meats - Products and Services

We've stopped there a few times and have really enjoyed the beef we bought. We're at the point now where we're planning on getting a chest freezer big enough to hold a butchered half cow. The price will end up being only a little more expensive but the quality makes it all worth it. Little shorter drive for us in Sylva, but not by much.

I was a regular Food Lion shopper, and still am, but I started noticing the quality of their meats had gone down. Both the chicken and pork chops seem to be "pumped full" of water to make the portions bigger, the chicken breasts are huge, and I don't like that. The steaks are not very good either. They have built a huge Ingles near us recently, and I love it for the produce selection. I haven't bought much meat there, however.

I have started biting the bullet and buying my meats at Harris Teeter. I only buy steaks there occasionally though, they are sky high, I only buy if company's coming. But the quality is really good. I'd rather have a smaller quantity of good meat, than larger portions of pumped-up, hormone filled meat. Harris Teeter is over-priced on the rest of their groceries, though. Most of their customers are the country-club set in our small town, they are the only ones who can affored to do all their shopping there.
