After all this hype over Making a Murderer, I decided to watch it (especially since I'm a Manitowoc resident). I have never known how much hype the Steven Avery case has gotten over the years, but now I feel Manitowoc has or will become infamous for being the county seat of the county Steven Avery lived in and has been accused of the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach. How has this affected you as a Wisconsite, especially fellow residents of Manitowoc?

A friend of mine is a former Manitowoc resident. She's having a fit about the amount of coverage this documentary is getting. Of course, she didn't actually bother to WATCH the whole thing... she doesn't need to. She already knows everything there is to know, according to her.

I, on the other hand, watched all ten episodes. I remember watching the news coverage of the trial as it was happening, but media only tended to show one side, so I found the documentary very riveting. The fact that it's caused so many people to talk about it is actually a good thing, in my opinion. The investigation and the trials were both just out of this world botched. I was under the impression that two guilty men were serving time for the murder of Theresa Halbach. After watching the documentary, I have reasonable doubt.

It hasn't affected me at all. Never did when it happened, hasn't now that they're rehashing it. It's simply a murder case, something that happens everywhere all the time. Not sure how I'm supposed to be affected by it.

I'd never heard about the case or the film until a coworker mentioned it last Monday.

Since I have Netflix, thought I'd give it a look see.

I too believe this is not unique to the Manitowoc area or the State of Wisconsin. You could probably find examples of this in most counties in every state. Law enforcement agencies and the courts are made up of fallible human beings. And a few of those are just plain bad people. I think some examples of that are demonstrated in this documentary.

Avery? Just a guy who may not have done it. Dahmer, now there's a stain on the state of WI.

I'm only into episode 5, so hopefully no spoilers here ;-)

I wandered over here from the Charlotte NC board out of curiosity. The accents are so intriguing. I've really gotten into regional accents lately... my wife is from Louisiana so we always have fun with the cajun accent; and of course they make fun of me for my Carolina draw. I binged watched The Wire a few months ago and discovered the Baltimore accent...

But I can't figure out the rural Wisconsin accent. I'm pretty good at mimicking accents and this one's tough!

In a weird, demented way, I was relieved to see you also have the bottom rung of society. I lived in the mountains of NC during college and it was eerily similar to Deliverance. The Averys look like generations of inbreeding and alcohol/drug abuse during pregnancy.

But back to the accents... whoa!

The series hasn't affected me at all, but I found this article in our news today interesting. Apparently it is overwhelming the Wisconsin records custodian with open-records requests. I suppose that is one way to bring some money into the state!

appstate1998: I'm sure you already know this, but we don't all talk like that. There has been quite a bit of discussion about the accents among Wisconsin natives, too. I've only watched a few clips on Netflix, but I would say the lawyers in the case sound fairly "normal" to me, but the accents of Avery and his family are a little hard on the ears. What was really interesting to me was listening to Seth Meyers' spoof "Making a Talk Show Host". I've seen tons of comments online, commending him for nailing the Wisconsin accent, but it sounds nothing a real Wisconsin accent to me. Maybe a mix of Wisconsin, Minnesota and North Dakota?

Most people don't talk like that. You will never come across a person in Milwaukee who speaks like that.
