I highly recommend the Dells. The Dells used to be dead in winter but due to the fact of indoor water parks the Dells are now happening in winter. A lot of jobs are tied to tourism in the Dells and believe it or not The Dells might be the second most diverse workplace in Wisconsin. I know this b/c 90% of the people the Dells resorts hire are from Eastern Europe like Russia, Poland and Spain for I have met a lot of people from Poland and Russian and Spain that work at the resorts in the summer in the Dells. They even sell my fav. Polski(polish) piwo(beer) in the Dells and outside of Milwaukee I don't know where else they sell it. I have also met two friends from Baraboo and said they absolutely loved living in the "Boo" as they say.

moved to eastern south dakota

good things:

low crime
low population
no state income tax
good paying job

bad things:

significantly colder then wisconsin in the late fall, winter, and early spring
not as pretty
not as upscale (has it's ups and downs)

Will probably not stay forever. Would love to move to the baraboo area of wisconsin.. previously lived in Ozaukee county.. for me getting up to 30 degrees occasionally in January is enough, I love the snow, but that just doesn't happen in eastern SD. It's much colder. Half the month it struggles to get above 15 degrees, and above zero at night. Plus I always liked the Dells. Going to take a drive through baraboo in a couple of weeks when I visit eastern WI. Nice forest to the south, driftless area right nearby, lots in the area.

Big reason why alot of people are moving to Atlanta. Oddly enough, I live near Atlanta and I want very cold weather and snow.

Yick! You forgot to mention that the Dells is a tacky white trash magnet for Chicagoland and wisconsin tourists who are too cheap to go to Disney so they drive up to Wisconsin and float around in little kids' urine for 3 days and have a swig at nigs. Not that there is anything wrong with that, it brings in more tax money for our greedy politicians to use inefficiently.

Born/raised near Green Bay, college at River Falls. Moved to IA, yes Iowa, 13 yrs. ago, now a resident of NC for the past few months. The whole time I lived in IA I thought I wanted to move back to WI and now I really want to move back. The winter here is pretty nice so far but I'm beginning to miss people of my own kind, if that makes any sense at all.............

I left Wisconsin in 2005 for Kingman,Arizona and stayed there until a few months ago.The best way for me explain relocation from Wisconsin to Az is it was truly a change. Arizona may not have the cold and snow but it also does not have a good economy - medical care - jobs and when it is hot,it is hot ! People used to say it is a dry heat and to that I now say so what. Hot is Hot. I am very happy to have come back to Wisconsin where
we have so many things that we often do not consider important such as paved roads etc.The only way to really know what we have here is to go to someplace else and compare, but the grass is not greener than right here in Wisconsin !

If you're looking for friendly people and ethnic diversity, I would not recommend the South. I moved from Wisconsin and have run into a lot of "anti-Yankee" sentiment. Southerners resent "carpetbaggers" and you will always be considered an outsider since you are from "up north." I have lived in Virginia for almost 20 years and people still make fun of my accent and all that. And you certainly aren't free to ever complain about where you live. They take it as an insult and tell you to go back where you came from if you don't like it down here, blah, blah. It really is a different country in many ways, with different culture, different politics (VERY conservative), different food (if you can even find a bakery, it definitely won't be open on a Sunday), different religion (no Catholics or Jews). I have a feeling a place like Arizona might be more accepting of outsiders. Florida would be OK, too.
