The Chinese city of Chongqing has almost 30 million inhabitants but how many of you are able to point it out on a map?
I can.

To be fair the actual urban area is 6-7 million. Largest city in China still Shanghai with 23 mill followed by Beijing..

Interesting city though... Love Shanghai.

The name AMERICA might cause those abroad feelings of loathing..and surprisingly there are people within the confines of the boarder of America that loath and bite the hand that feeds them..America is like having parents that are not perfect...and some thankless children may bark at their parents with "I hate you" . The arrogance factor is minor. Most Americans do not suffer from blind pride- The ones that do are usually the loudest and do not represent the average.

Now when you talk about American culture..in truth there is none...The nation is such as mishmash of cultures that a singular has trouble arising from the melting pot..culturally- America is a mess..kind of like real bad stew made by an arrogant daughter who can not cook and you do not have the heart to tell her the truth.

not that ive ever encountered much american arrogance but i perfer the american form of brash , possitive confident arrogance than the european cold , emotionless and cynical kind

I was asked was Ireland owned by England. I also got into a lot of arguments on Paddy's Day because Americans told me I was saying it wrong and that it was St Patty's Day when its Paddy's Day. Its not all Americans but there is a lot of them.
well you can hardly blame americans for not fully understanding foreign colloquialisms , paddys day is an informal slang name for st patricks day , paddy is not a name which americans are familiar with , patty is a girls name in america , paddy is not any kind of name over there , hence the understandable confusion

I don't know... I grew up on the Len Deighton novels and my idol was Bernard Samson and his cool, emotionless, cynical sarcasm. This has always been my image of the cool European.

Ugh, again with the misinterpretations! I said that Europeans are less doting and protective of their children on average than Americans, which is a fact! It is not at all ignorant, what I said. You, john, made your own conclusion from that statement and ran with it.

By this.............................................. ..................^^^^^, I mean that American children get much less freedom from a young age than the same child would in Europe, regardless of the crime or other factors.

And, Bob, it wasn't ignorant, you just misunderstood it.

It only means that I don't like the US culture.

I especially don't like the arrogance, USA = No. 1.
As Oleg said, the culture that you cling to that surrounds you and made you a hippy came from the U.S., so...

I mean, growing up in one of the most prosperous economic times that the nation has ever seen, with a higher standard of living than ever before, and hippies shun such success? Always was an odd one for me.

For the most part, arrogance is NOT common in the U.S. I'm sure people can come up with better examples of countries that exhibit arrogance.

Just like it's a "fact" that we let our kids drink alcohol at the age of 6, lol. Congratulations, you made my list of "stupid sh*t Americans say"

That was my generalization, Linda. I'm glad you are at least open enough about this to ridicule me. It means my statement has some impact. I know that there is MUCH more liberty in that manner in Europe than in America, not that that is a bad thing.
