In Sydney at the moment. The foods that are considered hip at the moment. Mexican is all the rage at the moment and has certainly over taken Thai. Has not traditionally been a type of food common here.
1. Mexican
2. Japanese
3. Thai
4. Chinese
5. Korean
6. Italian
7. Spanish
8. French
9. Lebanese
10. Vietnamese
But I mean in terms of how many restaurants there are, Mexican seems to lag well behind Japanese, Thai, Chinese.etc.
Forgot Chinese for us too. It's extremely mainstream, like Italian. Equivalent to fast food though in a lot of cases (probably most). We don't have a Chinatown where you might get more authentic stuff so only a minority of people venture over to Ottawa for that (where there is a real Chinatown).

Here in Melbourne due to the many Chinese coming in we're getting a lot more authentic Chinese as opposed to the westernised Chinese. Instead of lemon chicken, sweet'n'sour, Mongolian beef, chow mein (although that's still here) we have things like Sichuan hot pot, Shanghai dumplings, la mien noodles, fungi soup, Uyghur style flatbreads...that sort of thing.
In the Washington, D.C. metro area - these are what I've been to regularly:
Chinese
Indian/Pakistani
Italian
Thai
Mexican
French
Greek
Vietnamese
Salvadoran
Brazilian
Peruvian
Bolivian
Argentinian
Moroccan
Lebanese
Korean
Japanese
Burmese
Afghani/kabob
Kosher
Ethiopian
There are many other foods and restaurants I haven't tried yet.

Yes, but Mexican has the hype factor at the moment. Basically, Australia only recently discovered Tex Mex, it is the in thing. And is especially popular in hipster areas.

Same in Sydney, I've seen many visitors from America and Europe who are experienced with travel, being surprised at how authentic Chinese food is here.
I think the only foreign cuisine in my city is kebabs so er Middle Eastern I guess.
