What? Puerto Rico independence had 15% support in the 2017 referendum polls. Statehood was 52% and Commonwealth status was 17%.
Independence is not happening because Puerto Ricans don't want it.
Yea, I agree that it's not an inevitability, but it's possible as PR is more and more marginalized. That referendum was boycotted by all major parties that are against statehood and happened a couple of months before Hurricane Irma and then Hurricane Maria and many people in PR were somewhat dissatisfied with the US federal response, and to some, played into the notion that Puerto Rico is a lesser priority for the US. Do I think it'll definitely happen? No, of course not. I just think it's still quite possible within my lifetime.
I never understood why Puerto Rico wanted to remain a United States territory. They are like a Latin American country with a completely different language and heritage than the United States.

Probably the economic aspects of it as well as fear of change. I also wouldn't say Puerto Rico necessarily wanted to remain a US territory or even wanted to become a US territory in the first place--there have certainly been times in its history when it overall did not, but for various reasons the US did not want to let it go.

Canada is way more American than Puerto Rico.
I'm sure the reason Is they are getting some financial benefit from being a territory. Though after their huricanne I don't know how much help they got.

They got about $40,000,000,000 and their grid was rebuilt.
Given the fact that over 50% of people now are unemployed, and we rank 175 out of 195 countries in terms of healthcare, I don't know, what do you think?
And both parties now are essentially the same? Both don't have a backbone, and bend over every time to wallstreet?
And nobody seems to give a **** about homeless people? And they're growing in numbers. And news channels pretend to care, only during Thanksgiving time (just so they can brag or pretend they're somewhat decent).
I DO love one thing about the U.S.- the diversity here. I love meeting people of all races, all ethnicities, all age groups. I love that sense of bonding.

That's a bogus stat... 50% of people are not "working"... that includes all adults, including retired people.
USA is the most powerful nation on earth in one category and by orders of magnitute. It's military. Its military owns the air, the sea, and the space around the earth. It can see all activity down to 1 square metre and devastate any part of the earth without warning.
Enjoy your evenings
