I change the calender way too often
Each month passing so swiftly by
Before I can post a note on each day
I turn the page with a muted cry.
Will I ever see my grandson's become
Young gentlemen with children of their own?
Will I know the pleasure of holding them dear
Or will time pass quickly and they are grown.
Should have listened to my inner self
Should have listened to my heart
Should have taken the time to do
Some things and not been afraid to start.
Oh time , oh life, where are you taking me?
Can I have any of it back to make the right turns
Just for a day, a week oh please help me now
But alas, it seems written: no deposits no returns.
The darkness closes in on me making shadows
The light seems dimmer not as bright as before
Where once the brightness was so new
So breathtaking with little effort to restore
I want to shout and make noise to those
Who would listen to rants of an ancient being,
Will they hear me, listen to me, and trust me,
Or will the young go on refusing in believing.
Take a chance, full steam ahead, go now while you can
Don't look over your shoulder, don't look back
Head up, chest out, open eyes and all that,
I'm telling you now, please hear, don't follow the pack.
Others will say, no, no, follow my way, stay on course
Keep in step, don't go there, don't take that chance.
You will be sorry, lose it all you'll regret and cry
Like a sheep, you give up, quit trying, don't take a stance.
It's out there, it really is, see over there
Look, look some more, takes the blinders off
Peek around the corner, look around and look up
Ah, now you've found it, now that's the right stuff.
See, see, I told you so, I really did
The light shines brighter, it shines for you
Now take that first step, go ahead, don't be shy
Now that wasn't so bad, you're one of the few.
Sing songs of excitement, sing songs of joy
Don't sit in sorrow with unspoken fears
Embrace the unknown, embrace the future
Throw off the clouds that bring sadness and tears.
Go ahead, take that first step one foot at a time,
You can do this, I mean it, you really should
Feels kind of strange doesn't it, kinda spooky
Bet you never even thought that you could.
My advice may seem slightly naive and untrue
Probably something not worth taking to heart
I've heard this all before so who cares at this juncture
Leave me alone, I'm an adult, you sigh and retort.
You really think so, do you truly believe?
That taking a chance should be dreaded.
Without taking risks, doing the same over and over
Do you really know where you're headed?
I don't hear you, I cannot believe you
Want to stay behind and just hide
Oh, come on now, open that book, make that call
Go forward, go now and go with pride.
If you don't take a chance, you'll never advance! I love and heed that ancient advice! Great poem!
