There's a thread on P&OC about Americans who don't know what "D.C." stands for.
After learning, several years ago, that a substantial percentage of Americans think that New Mexico is part of Mexico, nothing would surprise me regarding how ignorant many folks are about their own country.
I just updated my travel map in my Facebook page, and everyone looking at my page now sees the message "Joe just updated their travel map." By latest estimate, this has been repeated 500,000,000,000 times on everybody's Facebook page.

I'm not sure if this fits the category, but I had to share.
One of the bridge engineers in my office wrote a report about cracking that was discovered in a bridge abutment. He saved his report with the name 'abut crack'. When I saw that, I nearly cracked up!

I know! I have heard this also. People have actually asked if they need a passport to go to New Mexico. Pathetic.
Didn't these people have that wooden puzzle of all the states when they were kids?

Maybe Facebook assumes everyone has multiple personalities.

Oh wow, I worked with a woman who argued with me about that. We worked at a shipping place (like the UPS Store) and she thought we needed customs forms to send packages to New Mexico. She thought I was crazy. After all, "Mexico is IN THE NAME."

We had a board game called, "Game of the States" that my brothers and I played frequently when we were little. We knew all the state capitals as well as the main products and industries of each state before we were ten years old.
