Just throwing in my two cents - our schools have gotten away from teaching students to look up words in a dictionary and allow them to rely on spellcheckers - the damnedest invention ever!!!

What makes it worse is that there are endless online research sites that will help them learn the correct words and usage. My favorite sites are Wikipedia, of course, along with WikipediaReferenceDesk, Wikimedia Commons, Wiktionary - the free online dictionary, and Uncyclopedia.

Anybody who truly wants to engage in discussion should at least take the time to try to get it right. I can understand for non-English speakers who try. But our own really hash things up and there's no excuse.

Today, I observed a sign with the following words, posted on one of the self-check-out machines at the supermarket:

This machine does not except coins.

However, I guess that it could have been worse.
At least they did not apologize for the inconvience, as seems to be the norm nowadays.

Agreed. One of my favorites is: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/

This is also accessible from the Refdesk site.

".. had been at home in a semi conscience state, ..."

Does one do sort of naughty things at a time like this?

A comment on a news story about the little daughter of a well-known celebrity: "She is the mirage image of her father".

A fleeting resemblance, possibly?

I noticed this today, and realized that I've seen it several times: "vocal chords".

It would take three people singing to make a vocal chord, wouldn't it?

Two would suffice.

I have glutten intolerance.

Which could mean gluten or glutton. Unless there's a new word I haven't heard about. There must be gluttons who can't tolerate gluten.

"but I think you get the jest of it"
It wasn't at all funny but we got the idea.
