Description: Located in historic Old Louisville, this institution of biblical higher education is “dedicated to educating people in the urban context through strong academic and professional programs in order that they may become productive citizens and agents of change in society.” A historically black college, Simmons College was founded in 1879 at its current location; during the 1930s, it moved to the West End after losing its property in a foreclosure. In 2006, the school was able to buy back the property and relocate to the original campus. Simmons College of Kentucky is in applicant status for accreditation from the Association for Biblical Higher Education and is working toward accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. A small school, it has a staff of some 60 individuals and an enrollment of around 230 students.
