Description: Since 1999, Highland Coffee has offered shade-grown, fair-trade, organic coffees and espresso beverages in the rear portion of this small strip mall in the Highlands. (The Blockbuster store is the most visible part from Bardstown Road.) All of the coffees and teas at HCC are purchased from suppliers who share the same social and environmental concerns as the owners, Greg and Natalie Hofer. This guarantees that farmers are paid fairly and that natural habitats are preserved in coffee-growing regions. A portion of the proceeds from many HCC coffees supports various causes throughout the world, including the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. The Songbird coffees help support and preserve various bird habitats in their respective coffee-growing regions. Open till midnight on weekends and till 11 p.m. on weeknights, Highland Coffee Company has free Wi-Fi; however, you need to make a purchase and get the access code from someone at the counter first. Next door is the Knit Nook (502-452-1919), which hosts a popular “Stitch and Bitch” session every Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m.
