Description: Located at the northwest corner of scenic St. James Court, the Conrad-Caldwell House is a must for old home aficionados and lovers of Victoriana. An opulent masterpiece in stone, the Richardsonian Romanesque structure was built between 1892 and 1895 according to plans by renowned Louisville architect Arthur Loomis. The house was built for Theophilus Conrad, an Alsatian immigrant who made his fortune in the leather tanning business, and the original construction price was $75,000. After he died, the residence was occupied by the Caldwells, the family who would figure prominently in the home’s current interior decor. Walk around its three floors today and enjoy gargoyles, swags, massive arches, and fleurs-de-lis, just to name a few of the details. Open Wednesday through Sunday till 4 p.m., the mansion charges $7 a person for tours.
