Description: Built high atop what was Chapin’s Department Store, Mt. Atlanticus gives you golfing challenges and views for miles. First opened in 1988 at a cost of $3 million, it offers two huge courses (the Minotaur and the Conch) in a truly unique setting atop the art deco–style building. The courses twist through Chapin’s three floors, up stairs on the side of the building, and up to the roof with views of the beach and roller coasters. The holes themselves are challenging and creative.

Description: Probably one of the oldest putt-putt courses on the beach but still a lot of full. Tricky corners, animal caves, and fairy-tale castles make up 36 holes of these two courses. Description: The City of Myrtle Beach’s Canal Street Recreation Center offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities for all ages. The center features a full-size gymnasium, weight room, an indoor swimming pool, banquet hall with mini-kitchen and ice machine, meeting rooms, game room, dressing rooms, an arts and crafts room, and two playgrounds. A wide variety of fitness and instructional classes and activities are available. Canal Street has annual, monthly, or daily membership options. The center is open Mon through Thurs from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Fri from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and Sat from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Description: The local YMCA actively sponsors community events, many geared toward children. Kids enjoy T-ball, baseball, soccer, swim classes, after-school day care, and day camps. The center features a Nautilus and free-weights center, a selection of cardiovascular equipment, and aerobics classes. Fees are competitive, ranging from a $3 one-day fee to $420 per family per year—and numerous levels in between. Call for all the details. Description: The Surfside Beach Recreation Department provides year-round recreational programs for all ages. Many of the sports activities are held at the H. Blue Huckabee complex, which boasts three ball fields. Instructional courses and seminars, held at the Johnson Civic Center, include arts and crafts, dance, aerobics, and more. Special events include Easter-egg hunts, Sun Fun volleyball competitions (see the Annual Events chapter), an Old-Fashioned Family Festival in October, a Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, and a Santa Hotline.
