80. Field Day Of The Past

City: Richmond, VA
Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (804) 741-8468
Address: 1741 Ashland Rd.

Description: Field Day of the Past, Goochland County’s September event, is more fun than you can shake a stave at, and is free for children under age 13. Kids will think they’ve stumbled into Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, with old-timey equipment hissing and grumbling, a cotton mill, stave mill, steam sawmill, and antique vehicles everywhere. Pig races, tractor races, and carnival rides offer more fun than the 21st century usually does.

81. Kings Dominion

City: Richmond, VA
Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (804) 876-5000
Address: 16000 Theme Park Way

Description: For those kids who can’t get enough roller-coaster rides, perhaps a day here will cure them. With 15 coasters, including the new Intimidator 305, which hits speeds in excess of 92 mph, I wouldn’t bother buying lunch here, because somebody’s going to lose it. For those not quite so adventurous, there are plenty of nostalgic rides like the log flume, old-timey cars, and a carousel. For the youngest children, Planet Snoopy just opened near the park entrance. Here the Peanuts gang will be on hand to say hi as youngsters tackle the tamest rides in the park. Kings Dominion’s water park gets its due under Water World below.

84. Agecroft Hall

City: Richmond, VA
Category: Tours & Attractions
Address: 4305 Sulgrave Rd.

Description: It’s easy to feel transported to another century at Agecroft Hall, but it’s the building itself that was transported, all the way from England and the 15th century. Children often think of Agecroft as a castle or a fortress, and the heavy gates and armor displayed here in this Tudor estate incongruously placed on the banks of the James River only add to the vibe. Besides a guided tour of the house, the grounds are perfect for roaming children. And in the summer, a picnic on the grounds before a performance of the Richmond Shakespeare Festival’s offerings is a picture-perfect way to introduce older children to the Bard. Children age six and under are admitted free to Agecroft.

86. Children’S Museum Of Richmond–Short Pump

Category: Tours & Attractions
Address: 2200 Old Brick Rd.

Description: This Far West End satellite of the more centrally located CMoR opened in June 2010 in a 15,000-square-foot section of West Broad Village. The museum features themed areas that use children’s literature as the imaginative starting point for kids ages one through eight, including exhibits titled The Enchanted Castle, Pirates’ Cove, The Magic Bean Stalk Climber, Whale of a Tale Water Play, and more.

88. Cobblestones Splash Zone Water Park

City: Richmond, VA
Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (804) 798-6819
Address: 13131 Overhill Lake Lane

Description: Splashing and swimming in the 38,000-square-foot pool or zooming down the waterslides are the main attractions here. The Python slide can send you rocketing at 60 mph down into the pool. Don’t worry—other, tamer slides are nearby. If you’d rather not swim, or need a break, there’s a sandy beach with picnic tables, umbrellas, and beach volleyball courts, not to mention areas for basketball and softball. Something you don’t see every day are the goofy floating tricycles; Aqua Cycles are available for rent on the seven-acre lake. A snack bar is on-site, but you are allowed to bring in your own food, which can help make the day more affordable.

89. Hadad’S Lake

City: Richmond, VA
Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (804) 795-2659
Address: 7900 Osborne Turnpike

Description: With three large pools, a baby pool, a fishing lake, miniature golf, volleyball and basketball courts, and much more, your family could find plenty to occupy them here. With some parts of the pool as deep as 16 feet, everyone must either pass a swim test or wear a life jacket. Bring yours from home in case they run out of their stash. Activities not usually allowed in pools, including jumping off a rope swing and water trampoline, guarantee more squeals per splash than in a typical pool. Fishing on their small lake is also allowed, but you’ll have to bring your own bait and tackle.

90. Waterworks At Kings Dominion

City: Richmond, VA
Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (804) 876-5000
Address: 16000 Theme Park Way

Description: I’m not sure even the ocean can compete with the 20 acres of slides, rides, and wet wonderland that is part of the larger amusement park. Little kids and their parents can frolic around the Surf City Splash House, with slides, a swinging bridge, and more, or at Lil Barefoot Beach. Those who like the wild rides can zip down the numerous twisty and tall waterslides, and the Zoom Flume lets families ride a raft together. Not every ride or activity here is appropriate for all children, so you’ll want to check the Web site before you pack the bathing suits.
