Description: Two companies will float you down the James, strings and life jackets attached. Riverside Outfitters offers an Upper River trip that works for families with children as young as eight who weigh at least 50 pounds. It takes two to three hours and explores the river from beneath the Pony Pasture rapids to Reedy Creek, avoiding the largest rapids downtown. River City Rafting ask that your child be nine for its Class I and II rapids trip. RCR offers guided tubing trips for children age nine and up. Both companies agree that children 12 and up who are at least 90 pounds and know how to swim can do the trip that goes through the rollercoaster-like Hollywood Rapids, but that’s the parents’ call.
