Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (804) 864-1400
Address: 2500 W. Broad St.

Description: Not where you would expect a theater to be hiding, on the third floor of the Science Museum of Virginia, but this company does a great job of using theater and storytelling to bring scientists and scientific and historical concepts to life in one-act plays for elementary- and middle-school children. Compelling performances have included North Star Light: Pathways to Freedom, about the Underground Railroad, and the more whimsical Shakespeare and Galileo, an imaginary meeting between the two great minds that combines wit and wonder. You can attend a play without paying admission to the museum or combine both experiences.

Description: Whether you’re looking for a little culture or a little fun, or both, Theatre IV’s plays will likely fill the bill. Staged primarily at the beautiful Empire Theatre downtown, the shows for those age three and older offer Broadway on Broad for families, from fairytale retellings like Jack and the Beanstalk, to the historical, like the award-winning Buffalo Soldier, to the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein gem, The Sound of Music. For the stagestruck, Theatre IV offers an overnight option where budding thespians see a show and take part in stage-related activities—makeup, costuming, stage combat, and acting—and then get to spend the night in the historic theater.

City: Richmond, VA
Category: Tours & Attractions

The emphasis is on family fun and entertainment, with the nutso new mascot, Nutzy, leading the way. Special salutes to the marshmallow and hush puppies give you an idea of the wackiness level here, and 13 fireworks shows after games in the 2010 season sound like kid heaven.

Description: For an out-of-this-world adventure right here in the city, get in touch with Riverside Outfitters, the only place for miles around that offers recreational tree climbing for kids age five and up. With certified arborists and redundant controls, safety is all taken care of as your child ascends into the trees and zooms down along a zip line. It’s too much fun. Birthday parties are especially popular for kids, either in the James River Park System or perhaps even in your backyard. For extra adventure, sign your child up Outdoor Adventure Kamp. Full- or half-day camps are available for children ages 6 through 12, as is a teen camp that teaches climbing, rappelling, orienteering, and includes a white-water rafting trip.

Both rinks have packed schedules, with figure-skating and speed-skating lessons, hockey leagues, and other fun activities planned, so check their calendars online before heading over. Skate rentals and lessons are available at both rinks. A growing speed-skating program at Richmond Ice Zone is attracting attention due to world class coaches. Try speed skating for a month for free to see if it’s the sport for you or your child.

75. Ashland Berry Farm

City: Richmond, VA
Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (804) 227-3601
Address: 12607 Old Ridge Rd.

Description: The name isn’t quite right anymore, as the only pick-your-own fruit this farm offers are pumpkins in the fall. Prepicked local berries are available in May. It’s a nice ride out in the country to get there, and a side trip to Patrick Henry’s Scotchtown could fit in nicely. At the farm, the autumnal activities include free hayrides out to fields and more fun in Pumpkin Playland, including winding your way through a maze for $3. Food such as burgers, hot dogs, fries, and doughnuts are all part of the charm.
