The view yesterday morning. It was a clear and cool night so the water had a slight fog to it.

Second Silver Salmon commercial opening today, not sure on the prices though. Lots of fisherman though and a new buyer.

Impressive. Sometimes the sheer size and geographical diversity of this state boggles my mind.

Default Salt Lagoons, Lazy Skies, and Not Very Bashful Foxes!

So yesterday while a polar bear was making the rounds of Browerville (that's across the Lagoon from the older part of Barrow), apparently visiting the Post Office and maybe the AC store, I was off down the beach on the west side of town looking for wildlife!

So were a lot of other people, some of whom seemed to be wildlife! :-)

But, here are a couple of pictures that serve no purpose other than to let you know what the area is like. The first one is where we spent a couple hours, cooked hot dogs, etc. etc. It is about 4 miles southwest of Barrow along the coast of the Chukchi Sea.
This one sort of captured the mood.
Shortly after those were taken, we headed for a place, about 2 miles farther from town, known locally as Hollywood. They did some kind of a film sequence there once, and built 4-5 buildings for it that are still standing, though not exactly in good repair.

But... we noticed 5 Arctic Fox pups on top of a cut bank of the lagoon. Everyone else watched, and I made an attempt to get close enough for pictures.

Initially I figured I'd better take a picture every few steps because for sure they are going to take off long before I'm actually very close. But just about when I figured it was closer than could ever be possible... one of the little cuties comes ripping down the bank right for me! He was clearly curious... and just as obviously not in the slightest bit scared. He was distracted by a scent on the ground when he was about 25 feet away, and actually turned his back on me and went around in a circle to sniff out whatever it was on the ground. Then he turned back to me, approached within about 12-15 feet, and circled me twice. He then ran back up the hill, and almost immedaitely came back down with a sibling, and the two of them circled me a couple more times!

Eventually I walked right up to their den. The following four images were shot in about 50 seconds as I chased the most timid one of the five out of his place at the den. He yipped at me 3 or 4 times as I walked up the hill, and really didn't want to leave.
