For years I have heard the ratio of single men to single women was like 5 men for every 1 woman in Alaska, and then I saw the new hit show....."men in trees" This reminded me of this rumor. How true is it? And is the shortage of women everywhere in Alaska, or in certain locations and why?

Smile men to women ratio...

There are more men than women in Alaska on the whole --- but actually in two cities; Anchorage and Juneau, that statistic doesn't apply anymore. During the roaring pipeline days (when they were builiding it) -- Anchorage was definitely overwhelmed by men.. but these days it's 50/50 in Anchorage and they say there are actually more females than males in the state's capital of Juneau.

You're going to find a LOT more men than women in "bush Alaska" (which is the term for any Alaska native village not accessable to the road system by vehicle -- you need to fly into "bush Alaska", or in some cases, some villages are accessable by boat or ferry)

There is a joke up here that refers to all the men, and it goes:

"The odds are good... but the goods are odd"

I always thought that was pretty funny! (Even though not all our guys are odd )

Anyway.. yeah.. places such as Fairbanks, Homer, Haines, (etc..) and rural bush villages do have more men than women according to local stats.

as a statewide average nevada and north dakota have the greatest male to female ratio.alaska is #3 and almost tied with montana and colorado.i read a small article about this just last week.as a statewide average there isnt a huge difference anywhere in the country ratio wise[even iowa made the top ten]but in cetain areas within a state there can be a large difference.

I've noticed everywhere in the world that men tend to prefer being in bush.

I spent a summer working in "bush" Alaska back in college (I'm female) and I'll tell ya, even if you don't look like a supermodel, you still get your pick of the "litter"!
