I would consider Chandler and Gilbert way to far to drive into Phoenix daily. It's not a nice or pretty drive with heavy traffic at the weirdest time - beyond rush hour. Some portion of the freeway will be under construction.

You didn't mention where your hospital was.

Even in the worst areas of town, there are pockets of nicer communities. It's kinda odd that way. If this is your first trip out here, there's a good chance other people at the hospital have favorite apt complexes they live in. They can give you refferals. Hospitals always have a newsletter with classifieds. See if you can get a few issues mailed to you.

And don't bring any heavy coats or sweaters, the thrifts are loaded with those here. It can be 90F on Christmas day. I still can't get used to that.
